Not really, although in the event of a claim, insurer could refuse to pay out, also if registered as a camper, and with an unladen weight of under 3000kg (or thereabouts) you can use car speed limits,
60 on single carriage way, 70 on dual, where as if it's registered as a van it's 50mph single, and 60 on dual.

A friend had his DIY conversion stolen, as it was still registered as a van the insurers would only pay for the loss of a van.

I'd change it over.

Just had my V5 changed to Motor Caravan and Insurance is now as a DIY Self Build Campervan, saving me £170 for the year plus now got UK Breakdown Cover too.

Still to change Tax Class over from disabled to PLG which will do this week.

MOT tomorrow!!

Sorry to hijack, but does anyone know where I can find out exactly what counts as a "camper"?

I am basically going to be bodging a matress in the back, but no water/electrics etc - it is literally just for sleeping at night rather than using a tent. Does that count as camper conversion or still a van?

Still a van, my van is a stealth camper IE no extra windows and is on a modified policy I was given the choice on having motor caravan ins but it had to be converted and reclassified on the docs within a certain time scale and I new it would not happen hence modified all declared and a few more noted so if I do them I'm covered.

An unexpected bonus of registering my conversion was that it is allowed in the London LEZ. At least that is the only reason I can think of that my Mk5 2.5 di came up as exempt when I entered the reg on the TfL site. I've got a certificate to prove it!

last summer with my Mk7 conversion well on its way, I asked myself the same questions:

So first from the .GOV website I came across this PDF document ready to download

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/15479/converting-vehicle-into-campervan.pdf

I noticed it was Dated 2010 ...... decided to drop them a mail to check for updates,

Sirs,

A recent internet search disclosed the attached DFT information sheet concerning Campervan conversion.

Can you please confirm the information sheet dated May 2010 is the latest publication concerning Campervan conversions, or send details of any updates or amendments.

Thank you Colin Appleby

Thank you for your email dated 20 March to our IVS enquiries inbox. I have been asked to reply.

Yes I can confirm that you do have the correct information sheet.

Yours sincerely

James Brown

So that is it in a nutshell regarding the Requirements. (By the way, Mail Sent 20 March replied on 1st May ... Not Fast !)
the same doc is still published on web.

It does seem however, insurance companies will decide to insure you or not depending on whether you agree and comply with their own requirements, which are often in excess of what the government require ( Understandable ... Government requires changes for re registration, Insurances' require changes that are an acceptable insurance risk)

I'm insured with A Flux. quick easy and cheaper than a Van Insurance. For 'Campervan Insurance' there is no requirement to make any formal changes, a matress on the floor will do. (It's about insuring the van for what you use it for. You can insurance what you've 'built in' aswell Eberspachers and the like. An option exists to formally convert over the course of the year if desired. I decided to do the work leading to re reging ... but at my own pace insured as a campervan

One of the issues I had was most others would not accept my NCB from Van insurers ... otherwise I would have found cheaper quotes ...(but with mandatory DVLA Reg needed) Regards Colin

Hope this helps
