Leaking roof on coachbuilt camper

Postby grumpyjohn » Tue Mar 24, 2015 5:25 pm

I had problems with the roof leaking on my Mark 3 coach built camper and despite renewing most of the rotten roof frame and roof panels ( a difficult exercise with external aluminium panels in place ), re masticing all the joints the leak persisted. Not wanting to take the vehicle into a caravan centre due to the expense involved I decided to have a go myself. Working out it was leaking where the roof joined the side panels I bought two rolls of black plastic bitumen backed tape used as a modern replacement for lead flashing from Tool Station and used it to cover the joint, sticking it down onto the roof and covering the joint strip at the same time. I also bought some industrial rubberised paint intended for sealing flat roofs from a company who I found on my computer, painted this over the plastic strip and a suspect part of the roof sheet which I think may have become perforated due to corrosion. This was done 2 years ago and up until today the inside shows no evidence of leaks. May be a cheap solution to any members with the same problem !!! 8)
