SPARE WHEEL INSIDE DAY VAN

Postby mtbcol » Wed Apr 08, 2015 10:18 pm

Hi

Is there a space saver spare wheel (2003 swb low roof t 300) available for my van? or has anyone moved the spare inside there van? I am short of space inside, but don't fancy "tyre weld"

Cheers

Colin.

Thanks' punto

weseeyou, I did think of that, but I then thought it may have been to much weight for ther door? door I need a special plate or anything made up, or just drill
some holes ( 3 x I guess) in one of the back doors?

Converting these vans is a BIG learning curve!

Cheers

Hi
Ford do a 'bracket' to mount the spare inside the van, last time I asked it was about £150.
Ford made them for the 'factory' LPG vans as the doughnut tank goes where the spare usually sits.
I can't find my pic of it (different pooter), but I did post a pic under parts wanted, but years ago.
Good luck, they are like hen's teeth.
Have fun

I'll take a pic of mine if you're interested. its been on the door for at least 6x years and 50,000 miles
I think it was fitted by the original coachbuilder Unlimited horizons back in 1995 when the van was new.

I now have a box fitted in place of the original spare which holds 2x propane bottles under the van with a removable flap inside the van for access

apologies for the delay ...I forgot until I had sat down in front of the tv tonight
Had to take half the van apart lol

The PO has just used a simple T piece strip of 5mm steel with 2x bolt fixings through the door . It doesn't look all that strong to be honest but its clearly lasted for 6x years + and all way round Europe.

I would think you could knock one up fairly easily using a bracket salvaged from a 4x4 at your local breakers yard and flat bar for the inside? You may have to alter a stud or two to suit the transit pcd.

I would think that would prove quite cheap and easy, and look good too with nice cover :D

Hi weseeyou

Thanks for the photos, sorry you had to take the door to bits :(

Does the T peice just bolt through the single skin of the door, then the wheel hangs on the bolts on the outside through its own bolt holes with a couple of suitable wheel nuts? I couldn't quite see from the pics, if so I think I get it now.

Punto443, I did think of that but its the flat bar thing that I am worried about. Is it just like a giant washer that the bracket would bolt to on the inside of the single skin of the door ?

My main concern about this is bending the door skin, it seems the door hinges themselves will take it by weseeyou's comments.

Thanks again, sorry, but don't want to make the old van look even more dented that in already is! I think I have grasped the ideas now!

Ideally you would want to spread the load as widely as you can to stop the flexing of the rear door, the larger and stiffer the plate, the better it would be, bonding the plate to the back of the door with some panel adhesive or tiger seal would help too.
