Camper Fiberglass Roof

Postby 96c » Sat Apr 18, 2015 12:37 pm

I have a 1996 mk5 LWB semi high roof and I just got a fiberglass roof from an scraped mk5 camper.

So how to put it on ?
It looks like it was just glued on to the old van so is that the way to go and if so what is the product to use.
There is no roof bars/supports on the camper roof so is this normal ? Or do I need to get /make bars.

Any advice would be most welcome.

My Mk4 roof is mounted over a skeleton frame, but I understand that later roofs have some variety of built in toughened ribs or summit similar and were simply stuck down..

Using what I don't know. Perhaps sikaflex all purpose black? They use it to secure windscreens...
Livin' in me van in Portugal.

The factory fibreglass roof have strengthening hoops (4 on a lwb).

Aftermarket may not have though...

Use sikkaflex or tigerseal to bond it on

I've recently done this we used tiger seal then riveted it too. It would have been on solid enough without the rivets tho.

Before you are finally ready to fit the roof, polish the outside with G3 and wet mop it so it looks like new again. Then make a mould and do 10 copy's, you will sell them easy.

I have the same roof on my MK5 lwb, when fitted the inside of the van becomes massive.

This pattern roof is very sturdy when bonded or riveted. Mine is riveted 4 along the front, every 6" down each side
with 3 or 4 at the rear. It is also held with PU / Sika type bond.

It's not as simple as just polishing it and taking a mould it will need release wax as well as a PVA coating to stop any risk of it sticking to it and you won't do that as a one piece mould it will have to be made in sections so it will release easy. However it can be done by someone who knows what they are doing spent quite a few years as a GRP laminator myself making moulds, boat building , finishing and flat roofs so know what's involved to do it correctly.

If you can get interest then get those who are interested to pay a deposit then get a mould made and start making them the mould will be the expensive bit as it has to have many layers of fibreglass as well as bracings to stop any distortion ect but once the mould is made to make the finished item not a huge amount of money at all :)
