REASONABLY PRICED BATTERY CHARGER FOR 240V HOOKUP USE.

Postby mtbcol » Fri Jan 31, 2020 8:55 pm

Hello all

Haven't been about for ages but back to sorting out my conversion now so would like some advice on a reasonably priced (not much cash about at the moment  ), but reliable battery charger that I can use when on 240 volt hook up to charge the under seat leisure battery (110 amp). I want something that can be wired in permanently and fixed out of the way, and some kind of indicator/status panel would be good.

Any ideas and "what I use" gratefully received.

Thank you.

Colin. :)

Numax chargers come in 'fit and forget' configurations to be wired in permanently - no having to switch settings once turned on at the plug, and good for wet batteries. If you want to go old school with a transformer charger I've found the Halfords fully automatic charger to be a good choice, with high/low and sealed/unsealed settings, and can be had at good price second hand on a certain auction website.

I currently have a Streetwize 4a smart charger in a caravan on a 75a leisure battery that it has never actually managed to charge to a point that it'll drop to float charging. That's how the caravan came as the built-in 20a transformer charger had blown a cap and it was cheaper for the previous owner to chock-block it in rather than pay a fortune to have the proper charger repaired. Needless to say I've got that charger out for repair, just waiting for new components to arrive.

As you're charging a 110amp battery I wouldn't use a 4a smart charger, it'll be knocking itself out to keep up with usage, I'd go for 8a minimum.

It's just occurred to me that the numax chargers are transformer chargers! Just quite sophisticated ones.

I suppose in the end they are all transformer chargers, but the 'smart' chargers have a range of settings and rely on potting compound acting as a massive heat sink rather than venting or forced air cooling.

Next door have recently broken an aldi toolzone smart charger - might get the hammer on it to see what's inside...
