Transit camper conversion reliability

Postby Muso31 » Mon Sep 13, 2021 6:02 pm

Hi all, I'm considering buying a 2015 transit to convert to a camper but do any owners have any thoughts on the following? https://youtu.be/dZIaZs_pG4A

What's the general thoughts on transit reliability and therefore suitability for conversion?

I decided as I was retiring that I would start with a low mileage X Minibus from the auction all my other vans had 100 thousand plus this one had 7000 klms on it and 2.5 years old so far it’s had a clutch ( must have been out at some time under warranty or Ford when assembling it left a toque bit on the release cylinder) it needed a turbo at 20.000 mls a throttle pedal it kept losing it so had to turn off and restart to get it back now the add blue has he’d to have a new heater in the tank and still has problems with soot build up and going into limp mode back in Ford now if you get one get one with some miles on it’s back with a bit of luck all the problems will have been sorted by the first owner but when it’s running it’s great to drive.

I had to smile at the video, there's half a rainforest growing in the scuttle, and a bit of superficial rust. It didn't look like the 5 year old van was well looked after to me. Cleaning would have prevented all of that
Water drain problem is well documented here, and is fixable.
I still have no idea what he was on about with the propshaft, but never I've seen anyone on here with prop problems, unless I've missed it :?

Turbo at 20k miles seems soon? So in some ways does it make sense to go for a van with >30-40k miles on the clock in the hope that the other issues would be ironed out?

I think the problem with mine is down to how it was driven before I got it a message came up on the dash saying it had had 80% not upto temperature running as it was a school bus it may have had a lot of short runs and probably spent a lot of time ticking over if it had been a van it’s more likely to have been used more at the proper temperature.but when you buy a secondhand van you don’t know how it’s been driven .the main problem with the turbo was the electric control unit the turbo been noisy would have probably lasted a long time as a camper but I like to do a job once and fit and forget it.
