DC to DV charger

Postby GOOSE1863 » Tue Jun 06, 2023 4:22 pm

Hi all, first post…. I’ve just bought a 21 plate custom that I am going to convert… what would people recommend to use as a dc to dc charger? I’m between the victron charger, ctek charger or renology charger…. I think I can add solar to the ctek and renology chargers at a later date so I’m edging towards one of those. Any help, tips or ideas around the electric system would be greatly appreciated…. Thanks

I used a Sterling non panel upgrade one but when you fit what choice you fit make sure it is well ventilated mine is in the kitchen unit and the ventilation holes were not good enough in summer so I had to fit a large grill in the door as it was running the cooling fan to long when parking up after a run to a camp site.

I used the Renogy DCC50S. Works well for me. When solar is available the alternator charging is reduced to 25A max. I have a handy isolator in the cab to disconnect the solar when sun is weak if I require full charging. It also has the advantage of trickle charging the vehicle battery by solar when leisure battery is full. However, if you plan to install a large solar array you'll have to use a separate controller as the DCC50S solar voltage input is limited. The charger is cooled by a large finned heat sink behind, but I've never felt it unusually hot. It's fitted behind the drivers seat so I can keep an eye on indicator lamps, etc.

I have the DCC50S as well, mainly for the reverse charging of the starter battery, it does require a rather low voltage pannel set up so no series pannels they need to be in parallel, not really found it to be an issue over the last 2 year though :) having said that my van is parked way more than it's driven and having a combined unit is a worry (one goes down all goes down), lots of narrow boats use the sterling or the victron, victron you have BT and an app, sterling is better value for money from what i can see ?

I have the CTEK fitted with solar and it works a treat - keeps the leisure battery full and also keeps the vehicle battery trickle charged.

I've not had any starter battery issues in the 3 years since I fitted it - and it's now 6 years old, even after not using it for 2-3 weeks
