how to lock doors from inside without fob/access to front

Postby ColetteJade » Mon Aug 19, 2024 3:54 pm

Hi everyone!
I recently bought a 2011 Ford Transit 2.4 T350 rwd and I've been working on converting it into a camper. last weekend my grandson asked if we could sleep in it and as the beds are in we did (outside my house :D ) but I then realised that I cannot lock the van from the inside. I dont have access to the front of the van from the rear which is how I wanted it and I dont have a fob key - I will get one if needed, which I think will be neccessary, but then I'm thinking if I do lock it with a fob what happens if I move about will the alarm go off and also what happens if the battery went dead and the fob doesnt work - am I locked in??

I'm nervous - anyone have any advise please.

thank you.

Isn't there a wheel, or switch, on the rear of the side door which locks/unlocks :?:

Hi Altransit - thank you for coming back to me.

No nothing on the side door to lock it from inside. There's an 'unlock' on the rear but no 'lock' function on either door.

That's strange, I'm sure that mine has one, but I can't access the side door just at the moment to have a look

Would you mind having a look at some stage? When you get a chance please. Honestly I've searched the whole door and can't see anything.
I can take a photo and later (if photos are uploadable here) when I get home - maybe you'll spot something im just not seeing?
Gosh I sound real thick!
Thanks again!

I will happily have a look and take a piccy, (in the next few days), unless someone more helpful chips in, in the meantime  :)

Our ex-minibus conversion has un/locking buttons on the passenger front doors and a rotating knob on the rear doors which lock all the doors. The sliding side door has a handle to unlock it and I'm not aware of anything to lock the van from the inside on the sliding door. When we're ready for bed in the van I lock all the doors with the fob and hang it on a hook.

Thank you Altransit and hello Redvee! Thank you for replying.
I've checked again and grabbed a passing neighbour to double check it so I wasn't missing anything. The side sliding door has a handle to open the door from the inside - nothing to lock it. It wasnt a minibus it was a commericial van so I'd guess thats why theres no lock on the inside?? And the back door just has a small lever to pop the door open. This works to open from the inside even when the van has been locked up completely from outside at the drivers passenger door. But again no lock function on this. So the only way to lock the van at present is by inserting the key into the drivers door and all doors have to be closed shut in order for that to work.
I will organise a fob key - that seems to be my only option - I priced it at the weekend €250 to get it and have it programmed - was hoping there was another way around it but doesn't look like it unfortunately :?

Can I ask Redvee, when you lock yourself in with the fob key - what happens if you move about a bit - does the alarm go off?

Thanks again for replying !!

Can I just ask; I assume that you don't deadlock it with the fob, just a single lock?

I wasn't aware you could deadlock it with the fob, I just press the lock button and wait for the beep of an open door

No issues with movement inside the van so I'm guessing there isn't an alarm fitted, just central locking.

Deadlock is 2 presses of the lock button, indicators will flash to indicate the deadlock. This would not be advisable if you're inside, as none of the doors will open using mechanical means, on the inside! The only way out, in the event of fob or battery failure would be to break a window to unlock using the key.

I use the double lock when sleeping to avoid opening a door without first unlocking with the FOB and waking up all the campsite with the siren. You could evacuate using the rear doors (The yellow tab always opens the door).

But not all the vans have the double-lock, it was a factory option (I ordered mine with it for that matter).

Cheers,

My mk8 with it been converted from a mini bus it doesn’t have double locking so you can open the doors in an emergency without fob or keys my mk6 did have double locking but I didn’t use it overnight if someone really wants to get in they will if you do have a fire you need to get out as quick as possible it’s the lesser of two evils.
