fridge vents in side

Hiya

I've converted two vans into campers and had different results with each!
I fitted electrolux 3 way fridges in each.

On the first I just cut the small flue hole out for the burnt gases, no large vents top and bottom.
This worked fine and there were no smells of gas within the van and no adverse effects.

On the second, I once again fitted a 3 way fridge (alittle lerger this time) and I too did not want to cut top and bottom side vents out. I did however cut the flue hole in the side and added some extra mesh covered holes in the floor.

However on the second conversion I am getting lots of gas fumes within the van from the fridge!! On this one I WILL be cutting out a top and bottom vent, I am afraid of being gassed too!

Foprtunatly may van is white and looks like a camper any way (Carver water heater cover fixed to the side and fridge flue gives me away).

Luke is that not a vent behind the rear most window, may be plumbed to that

thanks i do want the van to be safe without a doubt but if i can get away without cutting (or as little as possable) i will

mabe - i've been having another look and i think i've found the vents

they appear to vent into the rear of the van if they are the fridge vents there must be some channel or something in the tailgate to vent to the outside

i still havent cut the vents but i was browsing and i came across this

yet doesnt appear to have any vents in the side



dont know if they are painted green and very well discuised or it doesnt have any

Looks like internal vent mounted in the end of the cabinet, probably struggles to cool on a hot day...

Hi Luke, just been reading through this thread and there seems to be some confusion. I am 85% into my camper conversion and had to research the fitting of a fridge because I have a window where one of my vents would need to go. My enquiries revealed that the large vents normally seen on the side of a camper are designed to allow cool air to ciculate NOT to dispel CO fumes. It is possible to fit a vent in the floor and roof, provided they allow enough volume of cool air to ciculate. All gas fridges need to be vented through an exhaust which if properly fitted should not allow fumes back into the van. A CO detector is a must if there are any gas appliances in a van but, if the appliances are regularly serviced, you should have no problems.
I ended up fitting one large vent at the bottom and a powered mushroom vent in the roof. I only use the fan on very warm days and have had no problems. The vent kits sold by the likes of Dometic are designed to produce the neccessary volume of ciculated air in the minimum possible space, but there's nothing to stop you having a larger area behind the fridge. Just ensure the exhaust is properly sealed and fit that CO alarm Hope this helps

regards vents the large vents on outside are only for keeping the air cool around fridge but will need gas outlet vent fitting which you could pipe up to your roof so not as visable

You've got to have a vent in the bottom of yer van as carbon monoxide is heavier than air so it tends to sink and will 'pool' if it has no hole to drop out of.
