Ex Police van Electrics

Postby eddiewalkling » Thu Apr 23, 2009 10:47 am

Hi, I'm a new member with a new (to me) van. She was a police riot van, a 190 twin rear wheel and I'm very pleased with her though I foresee many problems, possibly a little pesimisticaly. Any how the problem I'm dealing with now is that when de-comissioned the police took a large pair of pliers to her, the more i look the more cut cables I find. She does at least have the lights, fans ect all in place already it's the reconection that I'm clueless about.

Any ideas? Ed

possibly a little hard to help you sort the cables without being in the van with you  , you best bet would be just to try and find the same colour cables from any switches to the items that should be on them, then do a bit of a rewire

oh and welcome to the forum btw

Thanks, but there were just so many cables I took the easy if a little expensive route and called an auto electrician. It cost £187 in the end but the roof fans, interior and exterior lights, six in all are now all working and the leisure battery is charging. I did think that £42 for six swithes was a little over the top though!!! even if four of them do light when on. I'll try to get a quote for the completed job next time rather than just an hourly rate.

Thanks again

I am just like the original poster and new to van/campers. I recently bought an old ford transit ambalance and it would one thing they in common already with the ex-police ones is the method used to turn off the electrics. mine is also it a totally amazing mess.

Mine appears to be based on the T190 pick up.
I to have a mess of electrics and strip lights I want to get working.

I appear to have a few power source areas with little red LED's still glowing

so I got to figure out which of these go to what behind the passenger seat. patch thingy

the patch panel from another world to me. It has got a lots and lots stuff detailed. on a bit of card and tonnes of lego looking stuff some connected, some not.

main thing I want is to know is: which are for VAN stuff that are need and need never to be removed and which are running the little RED leds.

whats the easy way of tracing the working lines and getting the strip lights working.

Got some questions :
how much is a new leasure battery / will a normal one do to get things going?
how power hungry are the strip lights compared to using just a normal lamp?
How much roughly would you expect to pay for full brake service ? It been sitting around for a few years doing nowt so needs them doing

Anyone got a 15"185 pickup wheel and tyre for sale in NW england? the spare I got with it dont look hot at all.

The fluorescent strip light use less power than an ordinary filament lamp, For a camper you are better with a proper leisure battery, as for price, as much as you want to spend, as foor the brakes, it will depend how bad/good they are and how many parts they need, Discs Pads Callipers, Drums, Shoes, Wheel cylinders, spring kits etc
