Gas bottle layed down under van !

Hi. If i was to make a hinged craddle up and fix to the underside of the van. Make it so its protected from all the road rubbish flying in there. The gas bottle would be on it`s side, is that a problem ? Also it would be a pain to turn the gas off every night and on again in the morning. Do most people do that or just leave the gas on when parked up ?

I dont think the bottle will be effecient lying down tbh , not to mention safe , btw the bed idea in the other thread looks ideal

You're not supposed to transport bottled gas in a lying down position, and you definitely shouldn't try and use it in that position

OK thanks, saves me scratching my head over it any more. A sealed locker inside it is (with a floor vent)

You could cut through the floor and weld in a compartment so that you dont take up too much internal space maybe?

they are totally different, the ones for fork lifts are liquid take off the hose goes to a vapouriser on the fork lift which turns it in to a gas. on regular bottles it has to be upright for to come out as gas

Hi,

My AutoSleeper camper, transit 1987, pop top, has a tin box with a hole in each corner, underneath and the gas bottle is stored in it upright, and it has a lift out lid that closes it all up and that keeps the draft and any gas leakage out.

It takes the red/blue bottles that are about 12" - 15" in hight, unsure of the gas weight and they are put in/out from the top.

The majority of the copper gas pipe is routed under the floor coming up near the fridge & cooker.

Gas bottle must be stored and used in an upright position or you could end up with liquid gas at your burner, this would most likely result in the loss of your van in a huge fireball.

As said only proper liquid take off bottles (commonly on forklifts) can be used on there side

Bottled gas is stored under pressure, and as other posters have said should be used upright, butane and propane are roughly twice the weight of 'air' and half the weight of water, and any leaks will run down an gather in any nooks and crannies hence drop holes to allow escape, it will float on water and should not be stored near open drains, gas bottles rarely explode they have a safety valve that blows off, still nasty! Explosions are normally caused by pockets of leaked gas, yellow flame at burner point indicates inefficient burning (too much air). If your bottle is frosting up you are pulling off too much gas too quickly, all this from memory in a previous job years ago hope it helps, sure all available on the net from people like Calor

Hi, quick question, I'm going to be using propane during the cold weather.
Will the bottle have to be stud outside while in use, or can it be kept in the gas locker, and used from there
Turned off when on the move.

It will be fine inside as long as there's no leaks.

Cheers thanks for that, didn't fancy leaving it outside cos i do alot of wild camping, and you don't know who's roaming about outside during the night.
Didn't want to wake up and find bottle gone and its to cold to run off butane.

Indeed.A mate of mine was parked-up with her gas bottle outside(connected up),and about 7am one morning some toe-rag decided to cut the hose and stole it.
