Pretty sure that tyres have to be suitable for the max speed & load rating of the vehicle irrespective of how heavy you load or how fast you drive.

Stick to commercial tyres mate, car tyres aren't meant for vans. :D
They are the only thing between you and the road, fit the right tyres.

Running car tyres will not only invalidate your insurance, and cause you to fail the MOT but they will wear quicker than commercial tyres

Having the wrong tyres will no more invalidate your insurance than having non-original equipment tyres fitted, unless any claim your or any third party make on your policy, can attribute the claim to your tyres.
As far as your insurance is concerned, you can fit wheel barrow wheels unless they cause an accident! However, the Road Traffic Act refers to the Construction and Use Regulations and they state that tyres must be 'appropriate'. That's appropriate load and speed rating as well as bieng appropriate for the road conditions. So if you venture out in the snow with 'summer' tyres, then you could be held accountable. Interestingly, your insurance policy will probably mention that your vehicle must be road legal, which means it must comply with the RTA and C&U however, this cannot solely be cause for them to wriggle out of a claim. For example, if you crash into a shopping centre the underwriters cannot invalidate the policy because your rear fog light was fitted too close to your brake light. It could turn to 'third party only' cover if you crashed into the shopping centre because your wheel barrow tyres exploded.

No i disagree..my shower of shite insurance tried to wriggle out of replacing my side window..when ive got glass cover, they agreed..then said no despite us agreeing we now don't agree...oh actually we do now agree but only partly agree to agree.

Umm we agree to not agree about agreeing...his a Cheque now feck off...

Im afraid insurance firms (under writers) will always try and wriggle out of a claim...unless its them claiming.

But the point is, they couldn't refuse to fix your windows because you had the wrong tyres on! Now, if you tried to claim for windows that were not standard fitment and you hadn't informed them that they were fitted, that would give them an excuse to swerve payment!

cheers for the imput chaps , but my main question was , will tubeless car tyres survive on a camper van , from what i have found out they wonte , they cant take the weight , so ime now looking at 4x4 tyres that are load rated more than my standard rubber , the main thing is at the mo is ime running 215/14s , on the back axel , so ime looking for sumit of the same radius on a 16" rim , ??

Hi,

SPEAK TO YOU INSURANCE COMPANY!!!

I agree that unless the wrong tyres contributed to the cause of an accident your insurance company would have to pay out any third party. BUT, I think you will find in the small print of insurance certificate/schedule there will be a clause about notifying your insurance company of any changes from the manufacturers specification for that model of vehicle.

My view is that insurance companies are your best friend when they want your business and you are making the payments, but they are your worst enimy if you make a claim. Speak with your insurers, if they are happy for you to deviate from manufacturers spec', great, but ask for a revised schedule to that effect. Why wait to make a claim to find out?

Car tyres are not rated high enough for the weight carried. Use van tyres.

Going a bit off topic, but I wonder how many people realise that fitting winter tyres is classed as a modification by some insurers?

Someone mentioned it on twitter a bit back and I thought it was a wind up, but if you take a look at the Association of British Insurers website it gives more information and a list of some insurers that do or don't require notification.

I wouldn't reckomend it either!... however........

I just popped some 175/14 winter (knobbly) remoulds (on some tin rims and as 'tall as the 195/70/15'#s I'm using!) on the back with the advance warning of possible snow, speed rating isn't that important as I only need to get to work in it most day (couple of miles)
and load rating 'not really' as I never have owt in the back, however I would imagine it's unladen weight may possibly be to much for these dogsheet rubber if being totally safe and honest!.... will only be for a month at the most!
