external gas bottle idea ...

while fitting my cupboard doors i found the hinges would not fit with the gas box there so ripped it out and will have to re design .

Was thinking has anyone seen anyone with a gas bottle standing alone on the outside of the van on the grass and then a flexi pipe and a connector going into the van ? was thinking could use a external gas point but feed gas in instead of out .

can anyone see any problems with this ?

I know its been tried with bbq points to fit european bottles but is considered dangerous or illegal

not sure of exact reason ...no auto shut off if disconnected? use of bulkhead gas regs?

worth redesigning as external gas is a pain...

Ive had a rethink and I will store a 6kg under the sink in a box and have another stowed away in the garage part of the van and swap over when one is empty , gives me more under sink storage plus I think its safer with less gas in living area .

What is the limit of gas you can carry ?

The option that I'm going for is an external LPG vapour take off tank. Easy to refill at many petrol stations now (and cheaper to refill). The stuff will work well at subzero temperatures unlike blue bottles (butane).
It does cost a lot more initially, and I have plenty of under vehicle space (4x4 county), but its worth considering.

i have had a thought about this as well yeah is a good idea but the cost compared to me exchanging bottles is a hell of alot more and i only use 1 - 1 1/2 6kg a season so no real benefits, plus since going from a caravan to a campervan i will not be having a gas fridge im going down the waeco route eventually .

i dont personally see anything wrong with having external gas bottle with a push type connection think some may be one way only thou and as most new caravans come with an option like this nowadays always seem the safer option to have it outside than having it near where your lyin sleeping even if it is a little more hassle to setup when u arrive maybe a wee chain aswell to stop someone running away with it lol

Where i have the inlet to my gas manifold i can have the 8mm copper pipe go through the floor and sealed and turn at a right angle and make a small mounting plate to mount the coupling on so its just under the van by the sill it only take 2 mins to go get the gas bottle and clip it on and a chain through the towing eye of the van .

But im still undecided .... i see it as you do see bottle outside caravans on sites but they are mainly ones that have a season pitch and go for the larger 13kg or 47 kg bottles .

Yea matt that fitting seems fine . as for bottle being outside dont see it being a problem as you said every static you see have bottle outside suppose you could make/buy a nice little cover for it if it bothers you . But would defo chain it up not to stop someone stealing it but to stop any kids messing about with it .

Bottle should be chained so that it can't fall over and break the gas pipe.

Don't worry I've scrapped that idea now, making a Ali gas box for inside
