Transit SWB MK4/5 2.5 High top camper

Postby weetransitcamper » Wed Apr 15, 2015 9:36 am

Hello.

This is my first post and my first ever van/camper.

At the weekend i took a 3 hour train ride down to buy this wee camper. I believe its quite a rare one with the porthole tops

I may have a few questions as i plan to do everything (try to) myself

That includes:
Redo interior
Sort rust
Respray

Im guessing the van is a mk4 with a smiley front as it has the square dash?

First question is do i have the bulletproof banana engine? its a 2.5 non turbo

Mk4 with 2.5di 80ps had banana manifolds with airbox beside exhaust manifold.

The Turbo diesel version had airbox on top.

Started some work, went to replace the old vinyl and noted about 1 foot of the floor was damp so decided to play it safe and rip it out

Cut it all back

Painted and cleaned up and added first part of expanding foam to fill the gaps, (no its not burnt ;)

This weekend i am finishing the clean up, laying the new floor ply and adding the new vinyl....fingers crossed

some progress

New floor down, sealed and solid

On top of the ply i put down 3mm hardboard so everything was level and the new flooring had a surface to stick to.

And the new flooring, still need to finish up a couple edges

Nice job.

Chances are the water came in from the A pillers in the cab, or sometimes from the engine bay via rust holes at back of wheel arches. Water drops down to the side of the strut tops and soaks into the foam of ford linings and rots everything... May consider removing floor lining in cab at some point to assess damage.

Yeh i checked everywhere for rust and holes, didnt find any... i think it was the fridge that leaked at some point as the only part that was wet was from the fridge down, possibly why the van never came with a fridge, purchased a new one so hopefully will all be good, the rest of the floor was solid and surprising there was no rust or holes in the damp area, so may have caught it just in time!
