Has anyone got their spare wheel on the back door?

Postby paulrichardson » Thu Apr 14, 2016 6:12 pm

Hi Guys,

I had my spare wheel stolen a little while ago and have not got around to replacing it yet.

I'm going to have a refillable gas tank fitted in May by Propex, if I don't put the spare wheel back where it was they say I can have a bigger tank fitted, which sounds a like good idea to me.

I wondered if the spare could be fitted on the rear door, land rover style and if anyone has done this I would love to hear from them.

How was it done? where did the bits come from? is the door too heavy, with a wheel hanging off it?

Or if anyone has any brilliant ideas what to do with the spare, I'm all ears.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Regards,

Paul

Id say the wheel is too heavy for the transit hinges

Oh dear,

This doesn't sound very promising.

It has a thin plate on the outside about 400x400 MM. thick and another inside think it's 1mm steel

Thanks for the photo.

That's just what I was planning to do.

Have you noticed any extra wear/damage to the hinges.

Paul

No but they might be different to yours as mines a dormobil. Also don't really know the layout of your can but my bathroom is behind that door so never really gets opened anyway, I use the other back door for getting in

I've got a Mk3 with the spare wheel on the rear door. It's got a triangular frame fixed through both n/s hinges with the third fixing on the door.

It seems to work ok but I'll be putting the spare back under the van when I get time just because I don't like the look of it.

Sorry, I can't find a photo at the moment and I'm 100 miles away from it.

I can't think what the MK3 hinges are like compared to my MK7, do we think it would fit on my van?

Hinges are totally different between MK 3/4/5 and 6/7
I think you'd want a carrier with its own hinges fixed to the pillar independently of the door hinges

Hi Ake,

Thanks for the info, do you think such a carrier is commercially available?

Bit radical but what if.................

I don't have a spare wheel?

Many of the motor homes aren't supplied with a spare wheel, you just get a can of tyre seal.

Bad idea. You'll be right up sh*t creek if you get a puncture that the tyreweld won't fix.

My daughter hit a curb and burst the tyre in a new VW that didn't have a spare. What should have been a 15 minute tyre change took half a day to sort out.

Also a lot of recovery insurance won't help you unless you have a spare and the tools to change it.

How big a gas tank are you wanting fitted? Is it only for cooking/ fridge/ heating or are your running the van from it too? I'm not sure if they are freely available with a vapour rather than liquid take off but you can fit 'torpedo' style tanks underneath the older vans along the side

I'm only going for a torpedo one for Heating/Cooking but 25 is the biggest they can fit in the space I've got left (after water tanks etc).

Without a spare wheel they could probably double that. It would mean much longer between refills.
