Postby fioroe » Sat Jun 13, 2009 9:54 pm

the 3 way fridge in my camper lights, stays lit but doesnt chill. Managed to remove it & stand it upside down for 24 hours. Refitted it but it still doesnt chill :( . Any ideas? presume i'll have to be looking in local ads for replacement! Taa

Does it work on 240?

If it does it may be just a weak flame, clean the burner out it will be full of debris / small rust particles from the exhaust flue which rusts internally and drops crap into the burner. A bit of fine wire in the holes did the world of good for mine.

Does the flame adjustment make an obvious difference to the size of the flame?

Taa.Will try that. I left it on for 24 hours & had left a fridge thermometer in it. it read 23c!! made no difference if it was on no 3 0r no 6. it was on max setting.

Some early models dont work at all unless very level, use a small spirit level, also clean out flue, some have a pull up spiral on a wire, check ventilation, heat has to escape. If it works in other ways then the unit must be ok.check flame adjust up and down. needs to be level in all directions. mine is 31 years old works fine!!

if its sprung a leak and lost all the coolant your pretty much stuffed.... no amount of levelling or anything else will fix that.............

Sounds like the refrigerant is bagelled. It may be possible to re-charge the system but it can be costly.

HI
I have had the same problem with mine, worked fine on 12volt, 240volt but would not chill on gas, my problem was definitly the flame. you could tell it was not burning correctly becuase of the colour. It should be a constant mainly blue flame not the pathetic yellow flame that mine had! as mentioned in another reply, it is really easy for rust, spiders webs! and general detritus to cause a problem, so before anything drastic, make sure the gasjet is clear and exhust flue clean, this should be done on a regular basis anyway. a good rule is, if it works on the other powers it can't be the coolent system as it would not work at all, and as for turning it on it's head fro 24 hrs, i have found that driving it around tends to unsettle the coolent just as well! even if it has been standing for a while. hope this helps.
all the best.

Mine did this, I took it out and cleaned out all the burner parts, flue etc. Most importantly, clean the jets, carefully with fine wire, fuse wire is pretty good and won't do any damage. This one looked like it had been there since fitting 23 years ago, works fine now. Obviously remember to thouroughly check for gas soundness at all and any joins, fittings, etc. after refitting.

I have exactly the same problem with the fridge in my new camper, works great on EHU but doesn't get cold on gas.

Thanks for all the ideas, looks like I need to clean the burner and jets.

Have you checked that you don't have any external winterising panels fitted? On my coachbuilt van you need to remove the panels to let the burner ventilate properly or on gas it will just keep hittingh the thermal cutb out. Doens't apply on EHU as the temp on the exchanger doesn't get as high.

It's not cutting out, the flame is a lovely blue colour and there is heat coming out of the vent, It doesn't have winter covers.

As it's got a nice blue flame and still doesn't chill I would say it's lost its gas.
