Ditto, I had one go up in flames in my old van, managed to lob it out of the back doors and smother it.... bloody dangerous crap things imo :D

Yeah, pretty certain it was in the the local rag but a few weeks ago a scoutmaster/leader ended up in hospital with bad burns when one went up bigstyle whilst camping. Our local 99p shop flogs canisters!

Back to alcohol then. Trangia set 25 seems a neat thing.

They are all great sets, my main problem with them is that they are so well designed and robust that I will probably never get to buy another!

The Tatonka is superior to Trangia in that is stainless steel and is better for actual cooking because of longer burn time (almost double), heat control and more economical use of fuel esp. with the simmer fitting and it is lighter and smaller which is why people go up mountains with them and the holder cum stand is well good for fry-ups and pots, regards the Trangia 25 I would not use ally for cooking unless i was particularly interested in Alzheimers.

The only advantage of the Trangia is a quicker boil time for a given quantity of water.

I use various specifically sized rectangles of lithoplate formed into a circle to suit different boiling/frying/cooking applications around the burners with holes near the base all-round for windshield outdoors which also decreases boil times significantly and protects flame when using pots/pans etc. esp. with simmer ring.

With the Tatonka large mug with folding handles the burner and simmer ring fit inside it with a cut-down stainless steel fatball bird feeder stand and the specific litho-shield around the mug, if pre-filled with meths then three boils using the mug are achievable in a very compact set-up.

You won't last long on campsites with a wood burning stove, maybe a tea-light one would suffice

our van is mainly for historical reenactment camping....long story will find pics of the camp and cannons one day for you

so i do have a massive standalone firerig in the back or trailer.
its possible to get through half a tonne of wood over a long weekend and I wouldn't use wood or charcoal in a confined space even like a tent.

I've got the original mint condition LNER coal burning stove from a stationmasters room, it is actually seen in an old Dad's Army episode, it's very compact and would be cool in a van/coach conversion some day. It's 11.5 inch deep, 8 inch wide and 18 inch tall with a flat 11.5 inch x 9.5 inch top with a 3 inch diameter vertical chimney outlet through the rear centre of the top surface. Black cast iron with two front hinged doors at the top and bottom, the top one is slanted and bottom-hinged and the lower one is top-hinged and slides to the left on the half-hinge, they both stand proud of the main body.....Pure class. It's made for Fry-ups/stews/kettles/heat and was used for just that.

I'll bung a couple of pics up if anyone is interested in seeing it.

 SHITE!! Never had any trouble with em, they are a lifesaver when staying in a luton mid job. I usually 'unlock' the canister when I turn it off and take it out alltogether when not in use. They are self sealing like an aerosol aren't they?

There are 2 types, self sealing ones like an aerosol, and the old pierce the top ones which have no valve, and cannot be removed until empty

yeah l use the aerosol one. Is that OK cos the other one did look pretty dangerous cos you cant re seal it. We also have a two ring burner with a 2kg bottle and regulator. Been using that for 30 years off and on with no trouble.
