My MK5 Fire Engine to Motorcaravan Project.

Hello,

I Fitted my sound proofing to the cab fire wall and cab floor today, on the fire wall I used a really good self adhesive foam on a roll and cut n stuck it on (Bollody good stuff from ebay) and for the floor, I used the "Fat Matt" stuff, this went on a real treat and I'm really pleased how the whole job went. Have a look at the pics below...

Hi,

I just wanted to update everyone that I now have the dash back in, and the engine is running after two years (Big thanks to everyone who helped me get her going via my other threads called "Mk5 AUTO wont start? VIDEO included" + "Timing Issue") Front shockers installed, track rod ends, new barings, refurbed calipers installed, new break lines.

Been pretty busy really, will post some pics real soon.

I'm loosing faith with the whoile project big time Monty/everyone... I hate to say it but I'm on a huge downer with the van so to speak. I wished I had someone local to me in Leeds that could help but thats not to be.

I'm having problems with the electrics at the moment, no oil lamp, no Fuel guage, (got engine temp working though) Its just one thing after another. I'm close to selling everything I have, all the parts I bought and calling it a day.

Get that...i like camper extraordinaires thread, every time he got to that point, someone turned up to help...i can make tea and coffee and hold the other end of a spanner but leeds is a long way to move from the kids...you never know, sometimes just asking for help makes people turn up...it does work wonders...dont give up yet and think about all the good times to be had when its done...

It would be such a shame to come this far to throw in the towel Chris.
When my project get like that I walk away for a while, get advice or pay a mobile mechanic for an hours tinkering when they are passing.
This is one of the reasons Mrs Monty has had half a kitchen for the past 2 years

I know... thanks everyone for the support. I'm Really feeling down in the dumps at the momment with the whole project.

Why do electrics make me sick!

The bloody fuel guage is not working (the guage is working because I tested it off the van) but its not telling me how much I have in the tank.

The Oil lamp/light wont work either, tried the connector (Thanks to Matt) and tried a new bulb in the clock itself but still no joy.

The front seats are been a pain to fit too as I'm having to drill new holes for the seats through the body Using high tensile steel bolts (before I get shouted at for using normal bolts) as I dont want the van to stop and the front seats to keep going its just a pain.

I left the oil lamp and fuel guage alone today and did a bit of metal work to take my frustrations out upon (thanks to my hammer) Got the drivers seat runners in place, then followed the seat base, then I fitted a swivel/turntable unit to that with spacers and put on an old seat that I had onto that to test it all and it works a treat. At the pull of a lever I can now turn 180 or 360 if I want to face the back of the van and the front again. Just got the other side to do now

Just to update you all...

As I mentioned before the dash is now back in, here's the photo to prove it below too


All the dash issues are now fixed , below is a pic of the clock unit lit up as it should be, I put silver faces on the rev and MPH guages but did not like them on the fuel + temp guages so I kept with the back, I think it looks pretty nice having that two tone contrast. The blue leds are attached to a dimmer switch, I know they wont be everyones cup of tea as I said in another thread but I like them

Been messing about witht he swivel seats again and here is a couple of photos of it facing forward then backwards. The seat iteself is just an old one of mine, but whilst I'm still working on her, I wont be fitting my new covers if you know what I mean





Thanks for all your support too, The days just seem to fly by and nothing seems to get done, I know it is but its slow at the moment and it gets me down. Still smiling though

Cheers pal, Its just the list of jobs ahead of me at this stage thats getting to me. I need to fit:

New brake lines (Front + Rear)
New hand brake cable + Install handbrake (its non existant at the mo.)
Front Drop link Bars
Front Track Rod Ends
Front Flexi Brake Pipes
OS rear leaf spring (centre leaf)
New rear shockers (Both)
Rear Bumper
Rear Step
Tow bar
Entire Exhaust System (Not that big a job I guess, just need a new front gasket)
Rear brake shoes (Both sides)

Then when all this is done I need to fit a clam shell unit to the front of the roof section to turn her into my vision of a camper. I already have the section, and boy will it be fun fitting. After this I need to prep the whole van body and then paint her. Easy if I say it all fast.

But what is really scaring me is the fact that I have to sort out the horrible whistle and screetching noise when I press the accelerator, it could be a belt or two slipping but I'm paranoid when it come to the engine, god knows whats causing it.

Some of them sound spookily familiar...in my very limited experience if the whining matches the revs, its belts...but you have a few months to pick off the rest...

Seems that youve done the hard graft mate,,, youre on the downhill run now mate,,,, stick with it,, its looking great,,, as above dry bearing in a pulley water pump ,alternator or something similar.
