m.o.t fail

Postby frank133 » Sat Jun 16, 2012 2:25 pm

My camper failed the test this week,
It needs a wiper blade ,and quite a lot of welding,
We did some welding under the floor and the front crossmember before it went in.
It needs inner and outer sills welding and a few other holes ,
My son is a metal fabricator so ,its not to bad ,he is buying a two poster ramp on Monday to make the job easier.
I might as well do a bit of respraying while it is off the road,
And finaly put the smiley passenger door on ,that I have had for a year ,then the doors will match inside.
So let it rain for a while I aint going any where soon, :(

well a bit of a update lads,I have just finished a full respray,I didnt realise how dull the old paint job was.
I have spent a few days spraying the design on the sides,it looks good anough to be stickers :)
I have got a bit of buffing to do ,the reason is I sprayed the van at 120psi and it blasted the paint on.
I didnt know the lads new compressor put out that much, its a industrial one so has no regulator on it.
I have buffed a few panels and its looking good.
Soons the welding gets done on the inner rear sills,I should be good to go.
The line on the side starts as silver and fades into navy blue, cant wait to see what it looks like in daylight.
I cant upload photos from photo bucket, dont know why ,I will have to check it out. :(

Well finally got my van up on my sons ramp today,
Its not just the inner wings that are rusted through,as I first thought, :(
One of the rear spring hangers was nearly falling off,it looks like a weeks worth of welding,
The tank has to come off to weld behind it,
That has been the trouble with getting a easy mot,[not dodgy]
A lot of the underneath looked solid ,but hit it with a hammer and a hole appears
Someone has been tacking plates over the holes and skimming with fibre glass,
I am glad I didnt sell it last year, and shafted someone.
At least my lad has a full fabrication workshop,so it will all be done properly,
And if I do sell it it will be a sound camper, its just been a long haul. :)

Yes Monty,I have been conned quite a few times, and its a bad feeling,
I wouldn't do it to anyone,I am not that desperate for money
I have never sold a bad car ever I would sooner scrap it,
If I sell my camper when it is finished it will be 100%
I might get a tourer and park it on a site I go to most of the time,
Will have to see what happens :D

My van is still up on the ramp :? the welding is taking longer than I thought,
My son has other work on so I cant complain, three weeks its been up on the ramp.
I cleaned and painted the front and rear axle and the diff,
We took the fuel tank off yesterday, and the sill behind is totally rotted,
even the tank straps were nearly rusted through, going to make stainless steel ones,
The thing is my son is not just welding the mot fail bits,he is doing front to back hacking every bit of rust out.
Because I am thinking of selling it he will do it properly ,

I finally got my mk 3 mot, today,it failed in June last year,I tried to get it done as a retest today, and was told to sod off, lol.
Its been a long hard slog,my son and his mate did all the welding,I did the respray.
It hasn't cost nothing hardly ,its just took so long, the weather was bad last year anyway.
I am glad I never scrapped it when it failed ,but it did cross my mind.
The night before the test I thought I would change the fan belt it was squeeley,a ten minuet job no chance, the bottom bolt of the adjuster that anchors it to the engine had sheared off,a long time ago.
So it was front off, rad and fan off, then half an hour to drill the old stud out,
But non of that matters now,a full test no advisories, the tester was impressed with the work we had done.
Cant wait to get away.
