Alternative to gas stove

Postby gosmart » Wed Aug 29, 2012 1:30 pm

I am thinking how to avoid gas.
I have seen some alcohol based stoves. Anyone tried that?

What about 12 V? Are there some solutions with that?

I will have leisure battery and not do a lot of cooking.
Would it make quick pasta or chicken breasts rosted for two?

12v not a viable option really, as it will kill a battery in no time, you could just use a camping stove outisde of the van, Or you could invest in a diesel stove, and run feed from main tank, same as they use on boats.

Personally i'd just use gas

Alcohol (spirit) stoves have been used in boats for years, Origo makes some nice one's.

I ran across Origo. Seems great for what I want, but quite pricey.

trangia are good stoves, I've got a 20 year old one that still works like new, may be a little smelly for indoors though..

I've got a couple of the swedish army set ups with trangia..well good.

I'VE got a couple of TATONKA too which also have a stand system that breaks down and the tatonka simmer rings that fit trangia too, the tatonka kit is all stainless steel and the burners are more economical on meths.

i use them all the time on bikes or tenting or out in the van mooching about on UFO spotting trips.

A cutdown bird feeder mesh makes a good support for the tatonka folding handle mug.

Safer than gas and meths is around 6 quid for 2.5 litres here.

Tamarack outdoors are top suppliers for kit.

Great suggestions guys!
Tatonka seems a bit small for my needs.

I came to conclusion that I could also live with gas, but no permanent installation.
Something like Bistro http://www.campingaz.com/c-546-camp-bistro.aspx or http://www.campingaz.com/uk/p-26405-bistro-300.aspx

The idea is that I can easily put it outside.

Anybody has some comment about those cartridge based stoves?
What happens if cartridge is not used completely? Stays in stove or is it possible to remove it and seal it somehow?

I would not use a gas cartridge type in a van, they explode real well and are banned even for tents at festivals.
