1999 MK5 SWB MID-TOP CONVERSION - MoHo

Postby MadMoo » Tue Oct 30, 2012 7:11 pm

Hi all,
As you may or may not know, TeeKay and I are converting a good ol' Transit into a camper. The main idea for a camper is for Glastonbury 2013 (which we managed to get tickets for! YAY!! :D ) but we're hoping that we can take a few trips next year also!
So....
We bought the van back in Nov 2011 and have been slowly trying to turn it into a camper (MoHo)...it was already part converted when we bought it but........well we decided it wasn't how we wanted it and pretty much started again!!
The photos that I (we) will be posting up will look a bit out of order as it looks like we're going backwards as we undo what has been done!!

We would like to point out that we are not machanics, body work experts, electricians or joiners so please go easy with any comments/opinions!! We're not planning on building the Taj but just something with a bed, something to make a cuppa/snack and keep us dry and warm! :D

We've already had a great deal of help with some issues and have probably not finished asking for help (This forum is the best!) :D

The guy we bought it off started a thread on here with his progress (Link below) we've taken the pics from his thread but take a look if you want to read his descriptions.

So,
When we got the van, it didn't always start first time...so we spent some time on the engine...no point converting it if it isn't going to go anywhere!!

So, we fitted a new starter motor, battery and cables as all of the old ones were as you say....fooked!!
Also, the immobiliser was (poorly) bypassed....so with some help from KING OF ENGLAND, we have a 'special' button!

DODGY WIRE - hard to see but was three bits of wire all bodged together...WTF?!?
Image
Image

Also, while we were in the engine we decided to tart it up a bit so painted a few bits...We think it made it look a bit tidier.

We also set about replacing the sliding door because A) we wanted a window and B) it was rotten...

It was on to the cab area next... the brown carpet had to come up as we thought it looked naff!!

Reminder of that... (you have to shrink page to see complete photo : ctrl & -)
Image
sexy isn't it!?!?

So underneath, the mat was looking grubby so up that came....oh and I found £2.16 as we were doing it...result!

Image
Image
Image

what was lurking underneath???

Image (The big hole is where the fridge cables came through)
Image
Image
Image

It looked worse than it was because of the dirt, anyway after a brush and a going over with the wire brush attachement of the drill we were left with this.....

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

This was in the N/S door step..

Image

We painted the rusty bits with Krust and then used metal paint to paint the cab floor...

Image
Image

And repaired the holes...

Image
Image

then another coat of paint...

Looking good there!

Oh, hang on - I'm the other half of this project!

The weather has been against us this year so we probably haven't done as much as we'd have liked (we have no garage or carport to protect us from the elements) but we have worked solid almost every feckin dry weekend for weeks! (well, we did stop for beer runs, obvs!)

It looked 'ok' when we bought it but just not how we really wanted it to be, and a little bit slapdash in places (apols if you read this, 'DJVirus'!) so we ripped the whole lot out and started afresh (it's a woman's thang ya know!)

Hope you like looking at our progress! :)

(C'mon Moo - these people are waiting for more piccys!)

OK OK OK...more piccys....although I think we may be over doing them...

with the step...
Holes were filled in/repaired, then it was painted.

We were lucky enough to find some step inserts at the scrappies so sprayed them black and fitted them...think they look really smart... even found one for the sliding door step!

we lay down some radiator foil and some grey felt that we've bought and then put the mat back down after spraying it black....

Also bought a new carpet...

So the cab floor was completed so it was on to other things....
First I thought...lets tidy up the N/S wheel arch box in the other....

So I decided to cut off the wood that was sticking out...

Image
Image

we were left with something that was a lot neater (as you can see I also ripped up the vinyl flooring that was down... :D )

Image

Boxed in the other wheel arch
