Handbrake questions

Postby RickJ » Sun Jan 13, 2013 9:27 pm

Hi all, new member here. I bought my first Transit at the end of October, and had it converted to a camper (330 SWB RWD, ex-EDF). I've run into what's clearly the well-known problem of the handbrake making it hard to fit a swivelling driver's seat.

I've had a good rummage through the posts on here, and there seem to be 3 options - lower the bracket, move it to the RH side, or convert to electric. I actually like the idea of an electric handbrake, but never having used one I've got a few questions. Can anyone enlighten me ... ?

a) With an electric actuator, how do you perform a controlled hill start? :?
b) Do you need an actuator from another vehicle, or can you use a more generic actuator (if so what?) ?
c) Can you install one without welding?
d) Is a DIY conversion legal? What's an MoT tester going to make of it?
e) Is there a suitable switch that will fit one of the blank spaces on the dash?

Quite a lot of questions, I know, but I'm hoping some of you Transit old-hands can help me out here!

Any photos of an installed actuator would be handy too.

Thanks, Rick
