Mk.1 Roadrunner project- advice sought

Postby Undernutter » Sun Jan 13, 2013 11:20 pm

Evening folks :) , New here, I went and had a look at this today, and am seeking some advice.

Its a 1970 Mk1 Transit, a series one "Roadrunner" coachbuilt by Jennings. a quick google search suggests that such a model was top of the line when new!

It has the 3-litre essex V6 and a 4 speed box (no overdrive), and has 60k on the clock (odd combination? thought only police/ambulance transits got the V6?)

I am debating it as my next project. The gentleman who owns it (an enthusiast) is getting rid after 13 years as it has sat still for 18 months owing to the fact he had health issues. He has since decided to replace it with a slightly more modern camper that has a 5 speed box and PAS (in addition to the fact it nees some work, no doubt)

The issues are thus:

It needs re-painting all over.

The roof does not leak, but will require some preventative maintenance and a re-paint.

The rear door frame is rotten and needs replacing.

The brakes are inoperative due to a failed master cylinder/servo. A new one is required.

It is solid underneath, and has had the plywood floors replaced, but the drivers side sill/arch intersection has rotted badly. there is also some heavy rot on a seam in the drivers side front inner wing. Terminal and complex? or repairable?

Other than that, all is required is general tidying.

So, my questons are thus. Is it worth doing?

the man has invited offers, what is it worth as it stands? (no tax or ticket since summer 2011) I was thinking along the lines of £500 or so, but I'm really not hot on ford values, more of a classic beemers man!

Is it worth the hassle? and is there anything in particular to watch out for on these vans?

And a final thing, I'll have to store it elsewhere other than my house. does anyone have any contacts in the oxon/berks area who, for sensible money, would have some storage space going spare? must have power, shelter would be ideal.

Thanks in advance

Thoughts?

Oh and by the way, another schoolboy error, it is in fact a "road ranger" not a road runner. My bad!

cheers!

I was thinking surely you meant Road Ranger!! Lots of cosmetic issues there, but nothing that can't be cured easily. £500 is a good price if it starts and stops easily (ok you need a brake master). I would get the seller to take it for a test to see what it fails on.

It depends on how you will use it. If you're going to use it as a real camper and take it any distance, you are probably going to get fed up with paying about twice what a modern camper would cost in fuel. I confess I got rid of my 20-year-old Mk2 Transit camper because it was only returning 22-24mpg. That was a 2l Pinto engined pop-top. With a 3l V6 and a heavy coachbuilt body I doubt you will average better than 18mpg...

18mpg you'd be lucky! I have one of these and it just about gets 10 as an average, but with a diesel in her you can get more like 30. get it mate they are going up in value and if you dont get it drop me a pm and I will have it!
