Fitting a hitop

Postby FFMan » Mon Jan 14, 2013 9:37 am

Hi,

i have a MK5 LWB that i want to fit a hitop to. I can find a roof seciton and doors in the breakers ok but wondering how hard this is to fit.

Is the top section bonded or welded on ? I am a competant DIY mechanic but if the roof is welded on could be a lot of work to remove cleanly and fit.

thanks

I have a Mk5 LWB high top.

The top if fiberglass so it is bonded but I don't know how. The rear metal arch section that goes over the doors is bolted to the rear uprights but may also be welded somewhere.

I reckon it may be possible to fit the high roof without changing the doors. You would need to find something to fill in the hole above the doors though, maybe some perspex as a window or frame and small caravan window. :!:

You will also need the arched bars that fit on the inside. Best bet is to find one to have a look at, unfortunately mine is all fitted out now so you cant see whats what any more.

i am thinking of doing the same with my swb :)
if i do i will weld the arched bars in place and use car window screen adhesive to bond the fiberglass roof on :D
i also hope to keep my low roof doors and use a sheet of fiberglass to fill the hole
hope this is some help

having just got the van i thought it was a late mk5, but i have been corrected, its a late mk6 (2006)

not sure if this makes a difference to my original question or not ?

They are bolted and bonded on. It's pretty straight forward, be careful as the rear doors are crap quality, mine started to break at the hinges, its hard to get a good seal if that happens.

Twas Graham @ Bodytech in Stockport. Roof transplant was excellent @ £700+VAT. He said it was 'a walk in the park' to them. My van was in their yard with their lovely German Shepherd guard dog for weeks tho, waiting for a dry day as there was no space inside. Then the indoor job was finished so there was space for mine & it was suddenly completed in three days :D So if you take it make sure there's room inside, ie. they're not doing a car makeover.

But the job wasn't without problems, be them only minor ( :?: ): missing cowel from around sky light which they swore they'd never seen. Although they've stuck so much glue around it that it's not leaked yet in all this weather, just as he said it wouldn't. If 'I' get a new one he'll shuv it in for me. The casing to near side wing mirror was also mysteriously missing & they hadn't noticed; I know it was on when I took it in. But in fairness he did offer to refund the expense of a replacement. (Now I have one but in dont bloody fit :( ) And when they took the back doors off my old van they forgot to take the door striker plate that gives the doors a tight fit, so I've yet to find one of those, (sent for one off ebay breaker, but wrong one & the twat wouldn't refund  ) But they will also shuv one in for me next time I'm passing. Only minor probs but irritating & time consuming to put right when there's so many other things to do. But really I am sooooo chuffed :D :D :D :D at the roof conv that I'd wanted to have done for soooo long & no one off here would help
