Mounting Inverter

Postby Kedishen » Thu Jan 17, 2013 10:54 pm

Hi all

A kind soul gave me a pro user inv800 800watt inverter today as thanks for helping them out.

My van is mk4 150lwb with twin battery trays. My leisure batt is on the nearside and is a Lucas 110amp deep cycle.

Where is the best place to mount my inverter? I would like it as close to the leisure batt as possible to minimise powerloss.

At first I thought about in engine bay with 240v cable through firewall plug into cab. Nice and clean. But - potentially damp and moist - and on the flip side - hot from the engine. Thoughts on this?

2nd is under the glove compartment, upside down mounted to the plastic. Should I be mounting it to a metal plate first and then to the plastic? Also, the cables for this thing are hefty, similar thickness to jump cables - what's the best way through the firewall with cables this thick?

Ok so now lets assume its mounted...

Can I hook the inverter to the the vans ring main?

To do this, I am initially thinking to cut the cable after fuse box and attach a plug on the cable out of fuse box and a socket on the ring main cable. An extension cable will come from inverter with another socket on, then to choose power source I change plug to either socket. Is this feasible? Any safety aspects I should take into account?

Many thanks.

Scott

Do in end I mounted under passenger seat, no additional plate.

Took the cable through lower firewall bung/plug behind auxillary tray since solar panel cables already go that way, extended with a set of 80amp jump leads.

Found this thread interesting. Will be figuring out my own version of the remote switch that will mount next to my zig unit.

Yet to do anything with mains cables.
