Morning all.
I'm new, and I'm hoping the experts and well informed of this forum can help me with information on adding a spare wheel carrier to my Mk 7 Transit based Hobby motorhome. The build date from Etis for the base vehicle was 5 April 2010. It is a 2.2L, front wheel drive, single rear wheel model ( I think it's called a platform cab base).
There is no spare wheel with this vehicle. The usual place for locating the spare wheel, behind the rear axle, is occupied by the waste water tank. However, I know that another manufacturer of a similar motorhome model to mine (Hymer) comes with a spare wheel fitted ahead of the rear axle. I've been in contact with Ford Information Services and the accessories specialist advises that there are Ford part for such a spare wheel mounting, but will not give me any part numbers. My local Ford dealer says that they can find part numbers, but no information of the dimensions or how to install. So I'm hoping, through this forum, that I can get information on the parts required to add a carrier. It won't be me who fits it, it will go to a Ford workshop for this.
The Ford part number for the carrier seems to be 1690279. What I am having no success with is information on the fixing kit needed to fit this carrier to the underside of the vehicle just ahead of the rear axle. There is plenty of space and ground clearance ahead of the rear axle, but I suspect there needs to be an additional cross-member between the chassis rails, or brackets, from which to suspend the carrier and wheel to keep the raised wheel below the handbrake cables and hydraulic pipes that pass centrally just under the floor. The exhaust system has a swan-neck exhaust pipe after the silencer with discharge to the nearside of the vehicle about mid-way between the front and rear axles.
I am aware of the issues with this type of spare wheel carrier (not confined to Ford but also know with the Sevel motorhome base) but as a privately owned leisure vehicle regular checking and cleaning will be the order of the day.
So, I'd be most grateful for any advice, part number or any other information that may lead me to finding a successful solution. My thanks in advance for reading, and responding, to this post.
Richard Thomas.
