Would a minibus make a good base vehicle for a conversion?

Postby Harmoniousnet » Wed Mar 20, 2013 3:53 pm

Hi all,

I've seen a nice transit T350 extra long wheelbase, double wheeled mid top minibus for sale and would love to turn it into a motorhome. However, I've not seen any other examples of this being done on the Internet. Would this be a good vehicle to convert? Is there a reason why there aren't any of these done yet? I know that I would have to have a class D1 licence to drive a 17 sweater minibus, but once converted and re registered as a motorhome would the D1 class still apply? Lots of questions as I'm excited about starting a new project.

Can anyone advise?

Loads of mini buses have been converted. It saves having to fit windows as well.
Not sure of the law on the licence question.

Hiya Im not sure on the license but would imagine once it is converted and the log book changed a normal car license would be ok as thats all thats required for a campervan. We are converting a normal t350 LWB van into a camper and it takes longer than you think but will all be worth it in the end. If you got extra long I would assume its the same length as a Jumbo. That would give you plenty of scope to do something really good. We thought and looked at a jumbo but was put off slightly by the fact the extra length makes it that little bit harder to get it into a parking space if you go into town. Our LWB overhangs a bit but I think the jumbo is a couple of feet longer. I guess its a compromise between space and ease of use.

Go for it and good luck.

Hey thanks for the info guys, much appreciated. Do you have any photos of your projects? I'd love to see how others are getting on converting their transits :-)
