Window, skylight and vent fitting in London

Postby unknownuser » Wed Jun 12, 2013 6:08 pm

I've just bought a Mk6 and want to fit rear windows (bard door, so 2 windows) and a window on the door. THe problem is that I can't find anywhere in London no matter how much googling I do. There is a place in Cornwall (Euroglass), a place in Corby (Leisure Vehicle Windows), and a place in Castleford nr Leeds (vanwindows.co.uk) but nowhere is close to or in London.

I don't mind driving anywhere in London, or even a couple of hours out of London. There must be somewhere nearby, if someone knows of anywhere can they please suggest something.

I also want to fit a roof vent (the spinning one) to keep it aired inside. Has anyone got any experience with these? Good idea or bad idea for camper?

I have considered getting a skylight fitted, but a friend told me this is a bad idea in a transit. Again, if anyone has experience in this and can help a newbie it would be much appreciated! :D

Hi and welcome.
Now then, I am the most useless prat when it comes to DIY, but I decided that I'd have a go at doing my own windows and roof vent.
The upshot of it was that I mangaged over 2 weekends to fit a 400x400 vent in the roof and two bonded side windows.(I got the windows in Northampton). Never underestimate yourself and many of these jobs you CAN do yourself and save a bundle! Cheers.

Thanks to the mini and white mice for the useful info and links  , I will give Colt Sport Conversions and Anchor Vans a call tomorrow.

Northwest2go- thanks for the info, and encouragement! I think I am going to fit the rear barn doors myself, I may also fit my sliding door window myself but I am having trouble finding a supplier for a window that opens for that panel. I need some ventilation, and I think that having a side window that opens may be the best and cheapest solution. Can you tell me more about your roof vent? Does it let water in when it rains? How much did it cost? Is it difficult to fit to a corrugated roof?

Also, I'd recommend that you all get down to B&Q for the Father's Day deals on power tools this weekend if you need some!

Hi, You will read on here many way of fitting the vent to a transit corrugated roof, but I did this:-

The vent was circa 40 quid from a local caravan parts shop.
First, I measured, re measured and measured again before cutting the hole in the roof....(no going back here)
I then built up a couple of layers of Sikaflex, obviously with more in the lower ribs. I then sunk the vent in.
After, I cleaned all the excess sikaflex away that had bulged out when the vent was sunk in to make it look neat.
1st heavy shower, and I had the tiniest leak...I got up and just smeared more sikaflex around as there must have been a pin prick hole somewhere. It has since been fine and withstands all heavy rain now.

Thanks for the tips Northwest2go. I have a few questions about your methods:

Did you build up the layers and let them solidify completely, or did you do it when it was still 'wet' and mouldable? i.s. how long between applying the silaflex to putting the vent on?

Is there a specific type of silkaflex that you used? How many tubes will I need? How long does it take to dry? If it leaks can I apply it wet?

What specific vent did you use?

Is an angle grinder an appropriate tool to use to cut the hole in the roof? Some people recommend drilling holes then using tin snips.

Lastly, do you have any photos you can post or email to me?

Many thanks!

Hi, Message received. I'll give you a full reply at the weekend, when I've been through my paperwork to identify stuff I bought.

Here are some of the answers that I can provide tonight...
I cut the hole out with a Jig saw I bought from a boot sale for a fiver with metal cutting blades from Screwfix. Drill a largish starter hole to begin with and then cut along your marked out line...(I used a black marker as I did with my side windows also).
I built the sikaflex up layer on layer but didn't let it go off, but sunk the vent whilst it was still tacky.
I'll gladly take a pic or two and email it to you as an attachment. I just haven't mastered putting pics on this forum as it is not as easy as some forums with a browse button. PM me your email.
If you discover a tiny leak like I did, yes wait for the surrounding area to dry and then butter up the outside with sealer with your finger or spreader but make it neat.(I think I created the tiny hole by being too zealous in scraping off the excess sealer on the 1st go).
Makes and product names at the weekend....Cheers.
