MR16 in GU10 Spotlight?

Postby suffolkboi » Tue Jun 25, 2013 12:06 am

Has anyone used the GU10 to MR16 convertors from Amazon/Ebay etc which allows use of 12v led in a modern spotlight fixture?

Does this make the bulb stick out too far?

Or has anyone a suggestion for wall mounted spotlights? Im struggling to find fixture that take a MR16 bulb..

The aftermarket LED bulbs are never as good as a purpose built led lamp, True led down lighters are really bright now, but they need to be kept cool, so one big heat sink unit, about £30 but last 20 years. The GU10 adapters have to lose both the drop down voltage and the led heat, so are never as good. Depends how much light you want, it won't match a GU 10.

LED's emit hardly any heat at all compared to a GU10 halogen.

It's not the heat emitted, it's the fact that the led has to be kept relatively cold. To get really good output on an led it has to be run hard near the limit, and this needs a big heat sink, and even a fan if its at maximum. Hence if your stuck on space the lamp won't be it's brightest.

I can't find any GU10 12v bulbs. Thats the problem.

Why do you say they wont be good enough? Ive got some similar to these

I don't see why they wont be any good. I just want a lamp to put them in, instead of having bare bulbs.

You won't find GU10 12v lamps as they don't exist. 12V are GU5.3

I know Gu10 12v don't exist. And as far as i know GU5.3 are essential an MR16.

Don't see what all the confusion is - I have some MR16 LED bulbs, but cant find any lamp/directional spotlight to put them in (Other than flush fitting spot lights)

So i was just asking if anyone had come across some..

Aaaaahhh, I'm with it now. (sorry) I work in Electrical wholesale and (bulbs) in the trade are always referred to as lamps. When I first started in Electrical wholesale, I spoke about bulbs, I was immediately put righ by my boss who said "They're lamps! Bulbs you put in the garden!
Anyway. All our directional spot fittings are GU10 and we don't have LV's as there is no call for them in the domestic trade.
However, It's not that they don't exist...I'll have a look in some catalogues at work to try and find some for you that may suit.

You do get MR16 LEDs but they are more expensive than the mains fed GU10 variant, which are more common.

I take you know that the lamp holders are different and that you will need to change it to suit the MR16 lamps?

Look on ebay, plenty choice on there

I think he just asked a simple question that someone on eBay makes an adaptor to take the 230v down to 12, what do we think of them. Short answer we don't know. I wouldn't bother trying to adapt a gu10 fitting to put cheap led bulbs (Americans still refer to them as), in.

Just spend the right amount of money and buy a proper led unit, that will be it for 20 years. Chances are the adaptor will fail before the bulb or fitting, so waste of money.
