Radio/12 disc auto changer

Hello chaps

Got a few off the wall questions for you.

Firstly, to set the scene, I have a year 2000 LWB 2.5D hi top camper conversion, with lights, TV etc running off a couple of leisure batteries at the back. In the dashboard is the standard factory fit radio CD running off the starter batteries (yes there are two of these).

Meanwhile, I have an old (but good) JVC Head Unit and 12 disc autochanger which I would quite like to install in the back to run off the leisure battery.

Now I'm not much good with electrics but I do have a spare cigarette lighter socket in the back which is very handily located for the installation of the head unit and auto changer.

My question is simply this. How can I connect the head unit to the 12v supply that comes out of the cigarette lighter socket? I guess I could easily buy a cigarette lighter lead (say a phone charger), cut the phone connector off and connect the wire to the wire to the back of the head unit to give it power. But would this work? And I think there are TWO wires that come out of the socket - positive and negative. Which do I use? Or do I join them together? Or connect them to different terminals in the block at the back of the head unit? And what about Earth? I think the fact that it's an already functioning and professionally installed lighter socket means it is already earthed. Is that right?

I do realise this whole solution is a bit Heath Robinson and not really ideal. However, at the end of the day I guess it is a simple question:- how do I get the 12v power from a lighter socket into the back of a car radio?

Don't use a plug, you'd be better connecting in behind the socket.

Negative, and earth are the same thing on a vehicle this age.

You will need to connect the negative to the negative behind the socket, and on most stereos there are two positives, one switched, one permanent, join these and connect them to the positive.

Where are you? Maybe someone close could help you

Thanks Ake - the reason I want to use a plug is that this cigarette socket is also the one that powers the TV.

I want to mount the cd autochanger just under the tv.

Then, depending on whether I want music or tv, I plug one or the other plugs in the socket.

Thanks for the advice though - to summarise:-

- negative lighter socket wire to negative terminal at the back of the stereo
- join 2 x positive terminals at back of stereo together
- join that to the other (positive) wire of the lighter socket
- then it's just a couple of speakers under the shelf and bob's your uncle

BTW, you will have noticed I haven't mentioned an aerial. That's because I am not that bothered by the radio - just the 12 discs.

Ake - I've got this from elsewhere on the web - just a as double check, do you agree with my notes (IN CAPS)



Check that your vehicle wiring harness fits the factory stereo plug. If it does, you can begin to wire up your harness. The harness that came with your new stereo and the vehicle adapter harness that you bought should have the same standard colors. After you've stripped the wires (only the ones you have matches for in your car) of about 1 cm of the plastic on the ends with a wire stripper, just connect them color to color-red to red, black to black, orange/white to orange/white, and so on. Here is the breakdown of which wire does what:
•+Red..............12v ignition IGNORE
•+Yellow...........12v battery POSITIVE FROM CIGARETTE SOCKET
•-Black............Ground NEGATIVE FROM CIGARETTE SOCKET
•+Blue.............Power antenna IGNORE
•+Blue/white.......Remote turn on IGNORE
•Orange............Dashlight/dimmer IGNORE
•Orange/white......Dashlight/dimmer IGNORE
•Orange/black......Dashlight/dimmer IGNORE
•+White............Front left positive SPEAKER 1
•-White/black......Front left negative SPEAKER 1
•+Grey.............Front right positive SPEAKER 2
•-Grey/black.......Front right negative SPEAKER 2
•+Green............Rear left positive IGNORE
•-Green/black......Rear left negative IGNORE
•+Purple...........Rear right positive IGNORE
•-Purple/black.....Rear right negative IGNORE
•You may not use all the wires in the radio harness or the vehicle harness. If you don't, just make sure that they taped up and secure (with solder/tape, crimp caps, butt connectors, etc.)-do not leave any bare wires that could contact any metal in the dash.

Yes, but you may the 12v ign wire joined in as well to make it work

I've got another idea.

The cigarette lighter socket is set into a wooden surface (kind of worktop) directly under the TV which is bracketed to the wall. Now, as you kknow, I had been planning to simply fix the head unit and cd changer to that surface and plug it in and out of the socket as required.

However, I have just had a brainwave!

If I cut a slot out of the worktop, I could embed the head unit so that only the front panel was visible. I could then easily connect the cd changer and mount in the "cubby hole" below and it would be nice and neat.

The question it raises, though, is how to get power to the head unit.

Obviously, I would not be plugging into the lighter socket any more but I was thinking I could maybe splice into the two wires that must be feeding the lighter socket.

Does that sound doable to you or can you spot any obvious flaws in my plan?

Hi there

Please see attached photos. My loom has arrived and fits the back of the radio just fine. I'm now stuck at how to connect the wires (positive , negative, speakers etc ) to the black block in the second photo.

Help please!!

However, this particular issue has been sorted by using theses to connect the wires.
