Virgin user and virgin transit owner - please be kind...

Bought a lovely transit SWB medium height van for conversion. Really enjoying the prospect. My partner has spent two weeks putting amber lights on top because, after a serious motorway crash three years ago, he has become very safety conscious. My neighbour has now told me that we will have trouble getting onto camp sites with these lights. Don't have the heart to tell him as it will put him on a real downer. We are having window put in and the inside will be cosy (we've already bought the bed and wall paper). Is what my neighbour says true? How do I break the news? Will the rest of the conversion make everything ok?

Please someone give me good news, or break it to me gently.

Hi Carmel, i'm not sure if it is true what your neighbour says, maybe they have encountered certain site rules or maybe it is a rule of an organisation like the caravan club.

I recently had an Iveco ex welfare bus converted into a camper we went to a few festies and a couple of Welsh campsites without any hassle, the only time I did was in a converted transit minibus about 8 years ago in Angelsey, the owner asked if it was a camper then stuck her head in to have a look but then let us on site.

I have seen all sorts of rental vans and the like on camp sites so it sounds a bit iffy to me, maybe go and ask your frriend for a bit more info on it.

There is only one way to break news to somebody and that is straight out with, you could just start with " Ya aint gonna believe what i've just heard..."

It can cause problems, but it really depends on the campsite.

Some will not allow vans with sign writing, vans with no windows and vans that look like they are for work purposes.

Sometimes it is just because of insurance purposes so if you can prove vehicle that will be slept in is registered as a motorhome, then you will not have problems. However, somestimes they are just snobs - not wanting their site to look like a gypsy camp.

My van was turned away from a site in north wales because the owner took a exception to transits being "gypo wagons".

amber lights on top might fall foul of the "Does not look like a campervan from the outside rule"

Best stick them on after you get it converted...

Thank you to all those who replied and offered such sensible advice. My partner found out when my brother asked him about it on the phone... He wasn't phased at all as he has covers for them all.

Obviously I was worrying over nothing. Perhaps I should leave all the big things to him!
