roof lights and fitting them

Postby bigyellow » Tue Jul 07, 2015 7:55 am

we are looking at roof lights at the moment and the biggest we see is 400mm by 400mm or 500mm by 500mm

i was wondering does anyone go any larger than that, its a jumbo transit after all??

secondly as most as designed for caravans they are designed to be flat surface fixed, my jumbo transit roof is undulating with out any flat bits

how do they normally get fixed in and sealed up?????

do i have to look at welding in a steel angle frame to form an upstand.

next up is wind when driving. if they stick up too proud do they cause damage with wind when driving along as well

has anyone considered or has used a car sun roof and fitted on in place instead, i was thinking the old hand wind up ones or a modern new electric version

Build them up on plumbers putty or some such thing. I also seen some which have hardwood to fill the gaps and are sealed with sikaflex all purpose or some such.

what a flaff

has anyone ever cut a sun roof out of a car and welded that into place instead??

I didn't fancy using one of the flimsy plastic caravan efforts, they are much too small anyway. I used to fit out yachts for a living and it seemed natural to use a deck hatch. They have a tough aluminium frame, good strong hinges and securing latches, and are available in sizes up to about two feet square. Well pricey in the chandlers but they are more affordable if you can find one secondhand. On my lwb high top there is a flat section in the centre that conveniently fits two sizes. I fitted a small one because I just wanted ventilation, not needing to climb through it! Sikaflex is the stuff. I dare say you could just clamp it down on a bead of Sikaflex and not even need screws. That stuff is formidable.

looking at the CAK catalogue we are talking several hundred quid each here so i am looking in to the idea of buying the whole roof from a car and then leaving the roof light in it and welding up a 20mm high section to weld the roof section onto, i can tidy the insides up when i do the clean dressing on the roof liner

theres a properly decent scrap merchant breakers yard i have found at telford that still has common sense there so i shall go and see how much a whole roof is going to cost me and what to do with the electrics and so one
