Running a fan off leisure battery.

Postby Lac » Thu Jul 16, 2015 10:59 am

Hello! I have a 85amp hour leisure battery with a 1000w inverter hooked up in my campervan. My question is how long can I run a fan (40/50w standing fan from a supermarket) for? I do have 12v socket at the front, but if I purchased a 12v fan it'd run my main battery dead. Whereas running off AC power through my inverter would only run my leisure battery dead worst case (I have a split relay).

It's so hot in my van and we want a fan for bed time (10pm-7am)?

I doubt youd run that fan for 9 hours doing it that way mate .

50W at 12V = 4.17A

85Ah/4.17A = 20.38h

Take in to account an inverter is only 30 - 50% efficient

20.38 x 0.3 = 6.12hrs.

That is also assuming your leisure batt is fully charged, perfect condition and has no other drain.

Also, I havent looked at fans recently, but I would think the vast majority are over 50W?

You would do better to find a 12V motor and bolt a fan blade on to it (or use a 12v fan)

Why not use a 12v fan, I have 2 and they are very little drain on the battery, about £13 each on ebay..

Remember that the inverter will generate high whilst creating electricity!

12 volt fans are the answer.
Simple enough to wire them back to your leisure battery.

if it's just to push air around, you could use 4" or 6" computer case fans and wire them in with a switch.

What he said!!! Pc fans are way to go and you can get speed controllers too! They pull barely any current as dc brushless and also very quiet compared to a.traditional 12v dc motor with fixed magnet and coil on rotor....

Thanks very much for your responses.

So 12v fan is the answer. No i don't have a 12v socket on leisure battery or inverter, however it does have a USB port on the 1000w inverter - perhaps I could find a USB powered computer fan.

Question: How long could i run a 12v fan off the main battery 12v socket for? approximately... As i could get a 12v fan with a long cable and run it into the middle of the van (as the 12v socket is where the cigarette lighter is).

A c9mputer fan or 5 would prob run for a good week or so if they were only current drain on the battery

I travel to Spain a lot and always use a 230v fan with an inverter , just keep it on a lower setting and use the inverter ( most are about 90% efficient mine is )
On lowest setting my fan uses 35 watts + 10% inverter loss less than 40 watts !!
Any decent battery should be able to keep up with that for a few hours ,if you are worried get one of those timer switches from poundland and set it for 3-4 hours and see what happens .
