Fiamma Roof Vent - Transit Connect

Postby Scifon » Mon Nov 16, 2015 5:17 pm

Hey guys,

Im currently in the process of converting my transit connect into a work/leisure vehicle. With the hope to sleep in it on the odd night or two when working away and taking it down to cornwall in the summer. Ive not got any windows in it for security and safety reasons so my only option for ventilation and natural light is to get a roof light/skylight what ever.

So, I've decided to invest in a Fiamma roof vent / skylight whatever but I'm a bit stumped on how to mount it, as with most transits (especially transit connects) have corrigated roofs and the roof light needs a flat surface. Has anyone had this problem or know of anyone that has overcome it somehow?

Any comments or tips would be much appreciated, sorry to be so vague in the description!

I did mine a while ago with the same type Fiamma vent, (I got the solid white one with the fan). I just used a load of Sikaflex to fill/seal it, made sure I pushed it right the way into the edges so it stays watertight, it's not that big of a gap to fill once tightened down, bit of 2x4 on the underside to secure it. Maybe there's a better solution, but I've not had any problems this way, great solid vent

Yup, got them on mine which was already converted when I bought it. Just sh*t loads of sealant. I guess you could cut a piece of pteg to make a type of skirt around the skylight that fits the corrugation of the roof but you'd still need a lot of sealant and it's a lot of fannying for what you'll achieve as no one sees it up there.

A mate put one in my Hi roof Mark 6 for me, I think he made a simple wood frame for it from scrap wood and used loads of silicon, not leaked a drop in 3 years. If it ever stops raining, I can go up there and get a photo if you want. I didn't have any windows till earlier this year when I got one put in side door, made a big difference. If not planning any side windows, I'd suggest 2 roof lights as mine was pretty dark inside when closed up even in daylight. I want to put an old washing machine door as another roof light, but not figured out how to fit it yet.

PS check your insurance, commercial van insurance for business use usually excludes use as a campervan. I've had to go for modified van insurance and get business use added but contents not covered.

To neaten the install you could use upvc plastic the thickness slightly less than the height of the corrugation miter the corners and shape the ends to follow the raised sections

Finally got around to doing this the other day and thought you might want to see the results. Thanks again for all the help and advice. I ended up building up a layer of sikaflex to fill the corrugated channels along the roof, if anyone's thinking of doing something similar PM me if you get stuck :)

got my mate to make a small angle iron frame to fit skylight, then cut roof to match, then seam welded all the way round.
tried all other ways couple of months always started leaking this has been in just over a year with no problems
