Camper/day van advice here...

Postby mafty » Fri Feb 12, 2016 4:36 pm

Hi all.
I have gained so much knowledge and information from this forum that I have decided to try to give something back.
I work for a company specialising in camper/day van conversions and wish to offer my advice to anyone undertaking any of this type of work, whether it be insulation, electrics, windows, whatever...

Anything you need to know or are not sure of, post here and I will try my best to help and advise you.
I can't promise to know everything, but I will do what I can...

I am converting a van at the moment am have a question about 12v electrics. I am setting up split charger and then to a switched fuse box. I was wondering what type of wire you use to run 12v to fridge etc?

We use 20amp cable for fridges. They draw quite a hefty amount of current and if you use too small a cable, you will get problems with the fridge cutting out due to low current.
20a or 30a is the way to go...

Hello

I have a 1989 Tranist Autohome. I've had it for 5 years and it's very reliable, but we have two issues:

RUST
We have quite a lot of rust, mainly on three of the doors. We live in London and so have found it very hard to find garages that have big enough work spaces to work on rust problems. Also, many aren't prepared to do old vehicles. Our current garage have advised us the most cost efficient way is to source new doors and replace the current ones. However, I have been looking for doors for a while now on ebay and various scrap yard websites to no avail! I think because the vehicle is so old. We just need to find a mechanic that cares a little bit, but we haven't managed to find one. Any ideas??

WATER PUMP
The one we have is now broken. Where would we find a new pump and how would we get that fitted? Like I said, we still haven't found anyone nearby who is a Ford camper specialist, so if you know of anyone, please shout!

Thanks

Regarding the rust, it's a transit, that's part of the package! Seriously though, I don't know of anyone in London, but I'm fairly sure you can get replacement door skins for most old vehicles, so it may be worth looking into that as an option (provided the frames aren't too rotten). Either that, or use the Wanted and Transit Parts For Sale on these forums. There are sure to be videos on youtube.
This series in particular...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krXS-JOGN4U would be very useful to watch.

As for the water pump, most are just 3 pipes and two wires, and if you get one that's fairly similar to the one you have it should be a simple job for a competent DIYer. We can supply you with one, or it would be worth looking on eBay.
If you are not up to fitting it yourself, you could contact us as we may be able to fit one for you. JAS Conversions. 01934 823033. We have customers travelling from all over the country so you're relatively local to us!

Hope this is of some help.

A day van is essentially a camper - i.e it has cooking facilities, storage, fridge etc on board, but with no sleeping facilities.
Hence you only use it for the 'day'.
