Replacement side windows. Can anyone foresee any problems w

Gentlemen. This weekend (if they arrive in time) I plan to throw these horrid old side windows in the skip and fit nice new bonded ones.

Can anyone foresee any issues I'll have replacing these over starting with a plain panel with no exsiting window? These are obviously smaller the modern windows but I'm not sure what size aperture the new bonded ones need. I assume they just require you to cut the metal blank out of the side of the van so the aperture should be the same as what is there already?

Also any tips on how to get the old ones out?

Mike, if you look inside you'll see the double skin which you just cut round to reveal the correct seam for the bonded glass, that's provided you get the full size correct glass and fitting kit it winch take long although I'd give 24 hours before using the van (just me but I've read 4 hrs iirc)

Hardest bit is cutting the hole, avoid spraying hot grinds of metal everywhere etc, an idea is gaffer tape flat and then again but 8a tube shape which should allow you to cut through and also keep the grinds away from the paint.

Much appreciated Loot, I was hoping that was the answer. I'm going to go for the full size glass but haven't stripped out the inside to reveal what's been done in the past yet but they look like they are filling that space and I'll just have some minimal trimming back to do i hope.

If the old ones are mk5 windows then they should just pull out, lift the rubber away abit at the bottom and pull (unless the fitter used adhesive) I have a mk5 slidy window in mine and when I liberated it from a scrap minibus it just pulled out. N

Thanks. I shall report back on how I get on. Sadly whoever started the work on mine was ether drunk or an idiot or both but I have corrected some horrific workmanship so far so I don't hold out much hope for it being easy.

Now then ,now then, I don't know if its a different glue these days but .
The ones I put in my old van the glue came out easily
This time both my pound world stretcher land guns gave up I had to abandon half way through and go and buy a decentish gun

Example: This was holding the awning on. Instead of finding a 50mm bolt, the used this and instead of cutting it down they beat it with a hammer so it would fit behind the internal paneling. The fixing leaked water and I had to cut it off to repair the work.

Hence my reticence about the windows...

No problem at all. The new ones won't be here in time for this weekend anyway so it'll be at least next weekend before they're out. No problem to hold on to them as I'm happy to see them put to use but let me get you some proper detailed photos of their condition before you make the trip.

as long as the runners and frame are sound I cant see it being a great deal of hassle

When fitting the new bonded windows, buy a decent fitting kit - some of the cheapo sealant/adhesive stuff is rubbish. Also, best not to wash/wax the van beforehand as the wax can give problems when fitting and then don't wash it for a week. make sure you use the cleaning wipes in the fitting kit on both the van and windows.

I was lucky as a friend works for one of the windscreen companies

I managed to sell my old windows for £40 too
