12V Led wiring

Postby Tcollings » Tue Jul 31, 2018 3:59 pm

Hi guys,

I'm wiring up some 12v lights in the back of my camper conversion. I've got a twin 12v switch with 3 prongs. I wired it up and have tested it today but when the switch is switched off, the postive wire gets very hot. I am just testing it at the moment so haven't connected the fuse box yet but it will defintely blow a fuse. I admit I dont fully understand the switch. The 3 terminals are for postive in, positive out, and earth. Why does the switch need to be earthed? When I remove the earth terminal from the switch the cables stop over heating? If anyone has any info that would be great!

Thanks a lot,

Tom

Are you sure on the 3rd pin isn’t for switch illumination?

Show us a picture of the switch and how you wired it up.

Yes as said above, switch needs to be earthed if it consumes electricity itself, i.e. has an indicator light.

Probably a bit late on this one but I would guess its a SPDT switch

So pins 1&2T are normally open with 1&1T normally closed and vice-versa when switch is thrown.

If this is the case you only need 12v in and out to leds, no chassis ground.
