swivel for single seat

Postby longhair » Fri Mar 01, 2019 5:09 pm

I have posted on the custom forum asking for any recommendations for seat swivels so I just thought I would ask on here too. I have managed to get a custom single seat for my limited so the next job is to make it swivel. So I wondered if anyone had any recommendations of ones you have in your campers. One member has a Fasper in his, so that is one I will be looking at.

I keep my eyes open for a used one of these and the Fasp one keeps coming up. I know they work but they're usually about £100 and, as I'm on a budget, I keep looking.....

Why not make your own get two pieces 3/16 plate cut to size drill to fit to seat and base in the centre dill a 24 mill hole for a 24 mill nylock nut and bolt . Then for the bearings get at least 6 ball bearings of say 12 mill then get a nylon disco of 6 to 8 incs slightly thinner then the ball bearings dill 24 mill hole in centre and then holes in the outer edge for the bearings to roll in then bolt it all together with enough tension on the bolt so the plates will turn but have no rock for the locking mechanism drill a 8 mill hole in both plates near the front and weld 8 mill nut to the lower plate for the locking bolt if you can get hold of one a locking bolt off a fishing platform or get a 8 mill Allen bolt and weld a Allen key into it .
My mate did this on his van years ago I was going to do the same but would have had to wait for the guy who machined the nylon ring was out of stock thought about using a wooden disc but needed to get van done so got the fasper ones .

P/ S I snapped the locking lever on whe I was fitting the them into my mk8 so I have used this method to lock the seats but have put to locking bolts in frond and back which is more secure then the fasper method of locking as there was a slight movement when driving putting the locking bolts in is a bit more fidelity then the standard lever but works better

I'd a camper that had been converted by Machzone some years ago and that had a similar mechanism. My concern with it would be whether it would be up to MoT test and/or Construction & Use standards.

All I can say on mot I have never been questioned by mot tester or seen them look at the swivel regarding it all they have checked is movement of the seat as in not pulling out of the body and the seat belts and my mate had no problems that will be 15 mots between us as for the regs no idea I was just answering your question about not been able to afford a new set and giveing a idea to do it on the cheap as it’s no problem for me as I have the fasper ones on mine

Plus a few more with my old van! I wondered because they're a lot keener these days but sounds like it's worth me going down the DIY route when I finally get on to that job....

Can't get a fasp for the Custom yet, so l am going to buy one for a MK7 and adapt it so it fits. I think it just will be a case of drilling holes to fit the custom seat rails and base. :)

If you are worried about the strength of a home made base you could increase the plate thickness to 1/4 inch all the outher bolts can be standard ford

I would advise against home made. Components like that must be type approved.

Following on from longhair initiall enquiry, I too would like a single swivel passenger seat
A single seat for a Custom seems to be as rare as hens teeth!, where could I get one from
I was wondering if I could use a drivers seat and swop over the seatbelt anchor point and armrest?, anyone done this?
Also the swivel base itself seems very rare, there are none advertised on eBay for the Custom
I’m not capapable of fabricating a swivel myself, but I want to do it on a budget, I know a tame blacksmith who says he’s done one before but I’d like to give him a swivel that’s the easiest to modify/install
Any recommendations for manufacturers/suppliers would be appreciated

I couldn't tell you with any certainty that you can use a drivers one. I thought about it but was lucky to get a new passenger one. I managed to get a Custom specific swivel made by Scopema. They are a French company that make RIB beds. I've not fitted it yet but it seems well made and is crash tested. What is good about it, is you can still access the storage under the seat and it only raises the seat height by less than an inch. :D

Thanks Dumper and Longhair
I’ve made enquiries of both firms for single passenger swivels
But it’s still hard to find a single seat plus base
Where did you get yours from longhair?
It’s looking like it may be more economic to keep the double seat and buy a double swivel at approximately £280 from Customshop designs
There was one chap on this forum who was very unhappy with his swivel, but that was over a year ago, hopefully Customshop designs has ironed out any teething troubles by now
Because I’ve seen 1 single for £400 + approximately £150 for the single swivel
One suggestion is to buy a salvaged drivers seat & base from a LHD model on the continent
I’m wondering if it’s worth all the effort for a single?
A swivelling double passenger might not be too bad, and there’s the benefit of still being able to carry 2 passengers
Anyone got thoughts on the pro’s & con’s

A double seat is very uncomfortable to go any distance even for one person if it was me I’d get the single swivel and go to a breakers and get a seat to fit even though it will look odd intill a proper one turns up on my 2006 mk6 I fitted a early mk6 tumstone passenger seat out of ex BT van I can put up with odd seats as lon as they are comfortably
