Duetto 1996 Stereo Update

Postby robinson89paul » Tue May 07, 2019 11:31 am

Hi

Wondering if anyone is able to help, advise or tell me of a success story.

I have just taken possession of a lovely 1996 Duetto that is all original. However, the Ford RDS 2007 Radio Cassette is no longer fully working (radio only) and I have bought an upgrade. Is this a straigthforward swap? I can get my new stereo playing a CD but no sound from the Duetto speakers. I am pretty sure I have all 8 speaker wires hooked up ok. Am I missing anything?

Thanks

Is it single din? What replacement have you fitted?

I'm not sure on the earlier ones but on the mk7 radio you had to configure it for the fader to work.
If your 2007 worked all 4 or more speakers with fader and balance then there can only be a problem with the new stereo yes?
That's where my ability to help ends unfortunately :(

Your options are to try another stereo, or connect the rear speakers to the front ones, you wont have fade ability and might lose a bit of bass though.

Aftermarket stereos won't need any configuring if expect but you could see if they aren't zeroed.

Thank you for the response loot - and an update following some further investigation tonight. The stereo I have bought is a pioneer deh-410bt. I have tested it in the camper and it spins up and plays the cd. If I connect a basic 8 ohm speaker to any of the 4 outputs it is audible. However, hook it up to the Duetto speaker loom and nothing. The impedance is much higher having measured with an AVO - seems open circuit.

I think car stereo are 4 ohm aren't they? Isn't it house speakers are 8? Anyway there will be resistance if working, some vehicle speaker arrangements are stupid and some older ford's have an amplifier hidden under the dash. Personally I might be tempted to feed 8 new wires from the headunit to the speakers, possibly upgrade them too. That's just my opinion though.

Just in case anyone else has this issue - an update. Amplifier found under left hand side of glove box. Bypass or include will be the next question.

Throw it away very very far

In those days they were like computers, wow i have 256mb hard drive :P 8) only £900 compete with 14 inch crt monitor :P

Yes so it'll be 25w or something crap. Bin it, new wires from headunit to speakers and consider upgrading them too, you could go further and add a modern day amp but you might need to zip tie most of the interior

Thanks Loot - went for that option and made a wiring loom straight to the speakers. Sounds pretty good.

A factory amp is not normal on a smiley transit.

They were only on the highest spec vehicles

Amplifiers on Ford Transits of this age are normal but apparently rare but I suspect that Autosleeper requested that option when building certain models of motorhome. I have a Legend with the same issue and have had little experience rewiring head units.

I just need to track the amp down now.
