Gas Detector

Postby TonyBrown1948 » Mon Aug 12, 2019 1:58 pm

Hello - I have converted a MK7 van and installed a 2 ring calor gas cooker. The gas bottle is stored on the van floor beneath the cooker, inside a kitchen base unit. I have three floor vents for ventilation, along with 2 ceiling vents. The bed is sited at the rear of the van. I want to get a gas detector so that any leaks will be detected immediately. Can anyone recommend a good gas detector and the best place to locate one? Thanks in advance.

I have been looking for a decent gas detector and I don't think there is one.
Gas detectors consume a lot more power than a CO detector or smoke alarm. It appears to be slim pickings with no clear winner.

I am relectant to fit a floor vent in my ongoing build because the exhaust pipe of my Custom ends right in the centre of the van and I don't want fumes entering.

I hope someone else knows of one.

You can always tell if you have a gas leak smells like sower milk all I do is turn off the bottle when not using the gas had campervans since 1987 only had one leak that was when I fitted a new bottle that had a damaged sealing surface in the neck of the bottle

It's a good point. Your nose is probably as good a detector. Unless you're sound asleep?
Don't know. I'd feel better with a loud alarm and floor vents but hey.

Why not do it properly and fit a sealed gas locker vented to the outside?

You can buy them for under £100 or you could make one easily enough if that's too expensive.
