Durite split charge relay, twin batteries?

Postby straydog » Tue Sep 17, 2019 5:24 pm

I know it's probably been asked before, but cant find a definitive answer.
I have a MK7 Jumbo, with the twin battery setup.
The front i know is the Aux and rear is the starter.
Should I connect the Durite SCR to the front battery terminal (Aux) or the rear (starter)
I have been running it for a while connected to the Starter battery without issues.
But wondering if this is actually the correct way to do it.
Reason for the question, I have noticed the Red indicator light on the SCR appears to be on continuously.
Which gives an open circuit between the Starter battery and the House batteries.
The starter battery has the same voltage as the house batteries (13.5v) kept topped up by the solar,
But the van Aux battery only has 12.5v, which seems a bit low, I realise it's being drawn on by the van ancillary stuff.

Any help or advise would be grateful
Cheers CVD

If i remember correctly, that type of split charger will work in both directions, so when your solar is generating sufficient voltage to the leisure batteries the vsr will also charge whichever battery it is connect to for charging from the vehicle.

As it is, you should be connecting it to the customer connection point on the back of the driver's seat as this is a fused connection designed for that kind of installation. This would then charge the aux battery, and leave the starter battery out of the circuit.

Hi Mat, thanks for the reply.
Your dead right, I also had a reply from "SimplySplitCharge" who supplied the SCR .
They said basically the same thing, so have now connected it to the Aux battery.

Question, You say about a customer connection point on the back of the driver's seat
I don't know anything about this connection, and can't see anything obvious.
Any idea where to look or maybe a link I could look up.

When you have the seat and battery cover pulled forward, you will see the battery fusebox (the 'prefuse box') at the back of the seat base. If you take that cover off you'll see three 60a midi fuses at the end near the hand brake. These are the fuses for the customer connection points. The actual connection points themselves are on the outside of seat, and will be covered by a red cap. Have a look for the battery fusebox on eBay as some of the listings will show you the connection points in relation to the rest of the fusebox. If you've got a bulkhead in they can be awkward to find and get a ring connector onto.

Hey Mat.
Thanks for that detailed reply, I'll check it out tomorrow.
If I can get a wire onto it then I will do that.
If not then I'll just connect direct to the Aux battery.
The SCR has a 100A fuse inline anyway, so should be ok.

I wouldn't connect an older style split charge system through the CCP connections as the split charge relays are designed to take full battery current, as the op states his has a 100a fuse which is way over the max CCP connection rating.
The CCP are perfect for connecting B2B charging systems though.

Hey Airthies thanks for that extra info, that makes sense.
I didn't manage to find the CCP anyway, so connected the SCR direct to the Aux battery.
I'll run it like that for now, see how it goes, but at the moment all looks well.

Thanks for all the help guys

Hi guys
I am very new to this split charge system. So my question is this, I have a 2013 2.2rwd transit with the eco button. Do I need to buy the ctek 250 smart split charge relay, or do I just get the durite? And do I connect it to the aux( front battery)
My van has the stop start light that does light up on ignition, but the stop start does not work.
Thanks

Hello Lofty

I have just left a comment on your dedicated post

https://fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=197330&c=1

But I wanted to mention it here as well. I would all way recommend a dedicated charge controller like the Ctek as this will give you the best performance and life out of you secondary battery. I know they are more expensive but you will save it in the long run in the life span of you battery and get better performance out of the battery, plus is has an in built MPPT charge controller for solar :D Please see the above post for more details.

Many thanks
