Roof rack - side mount ladder?

Hi all.

I spent the weekend making a roof rack for my SWB Transit conversion (I'll post pics when done!). I'd like to fabricate a permanent ladder for access, and was planning on putting one on the side of the van to leave the rear free for a bike rack.I'd be mounting it OS above the rear wheel. I can't find much info on this being done in this country though and I'm not sure about the law on it. I'd love to hear some thoughts! Good idea or not? I'll go for a standard rear-mount ladder if it's not sensible.

Which country are you referring to?
In THIS country, Australia, my country, it is permitted if it is built so it can't catch pedestrians and is closer to the body than the rear view mirrors.

Sorry - should have been clearer that I meant the UK.

I reckon I would get away with it, but on reflection I think I might well go for the rear door after all - not least to keep the fuel mileage looking a bit healthier.

I can’t see there being any issues legally with it on the o/s, surely can’t be much different to a glaziers van with the glass rack on the side.


I have seen one van with a side mounted ladder and that was mounted on the n/s

Hi I'm in Australia and made this ladder for my van, its removable so can put it any where on either side if needed. Made it like this, so can get to roof pods, also to clean solar panels

I'm not aware of anything legal why you shouldn't have a ladder on the side in the UK. You will have to make it without sharp edges though!
