Rust advice

Postby Sabbie98 » Mon Oct 19, 2020 7:05 pm

Hi guys,

Read lots on here about rust but I feel most advice is on a case by case basis.

We're converting a mk5 crew cab and have been putting off rust repair until further on in the build mainly because I've been doing as much prep myself as and when I get some spare time (hopefully saving us some money?? :| )

This weekend I took a closer look at the rust on the inside of the wheel arch and realised putting walls and insulation infront of that is not wise, therefore, we should probably look at getting it all sorted before we progress much further.

Any advice would be great, price estimates, parts needed and welder recommendations (lincoln based) would be awesome.

Pics are of the nearside sill and rear wheel arch, offside will need attention also but is not as bad.

Thanks in advance,
Jack

Panels can be bought from Central Panels, and panels they don't do can often be found at companies like BisonParts in Sheffield.

The rest, like inner sills and rear crossmember can be made up from sheet (from a steel stockholder like Mike Barugh in Hull) with curved pieces bent over a length of scaffold tube or similar.

If you confident buy a mig welder and learn to weld, it'll be cheaper than getting a garage to do it.

Most importantly, as you've worked out, get the welding done before building the interior, or at least make the interior removeable at the places most likely to need work in the future, like wheel arches and rear quarters.

Meanwhile, Ramen and superglue will probably work in the arches, but no good for panels or sills.

Welding has been all done and painted over the winter! The welder couldn’t get his hands on panels so has done what he can. Passenger side has had a new sill and he’s worked his magic on the panels. Drivers side wasn’t so bad but has been tidied up. All of which cost us £550!
You get what you pay for I think, I’d have rather had new panels, and there is some under seal we’ll need to do in winter, but have a look at the pics and see for yourself.

On all my vans I’ve waxoil under everything inside before I put the insulation in and the floor down even the roof panels it just needs a good airing out before you sleep in it .

Your welder has done a nice job there.

Like Chug has said, get some waxoil in, and air it, it will have been full of fumes.
