Samwise's Mk6 Camper Conversion

Postby Samwise-zambeezi » Mon Nov 09, 2020 2:59 pm

Hi all!

Got myself a van and can't wait to start my new conversion project. It's a Mk6 T350 LWB High Roof, 2.4TD, 90ps. Also, it's the crewcab version with the side windows where i want them, making it the perfect model.

Pics attached. Will update on progress as i go (and no doubt have a million questions to ask along the way).

Sam

That looks a cracker! Should be lots of room in the back, the mk6/7 lwb is almost as long in the back as the HiCube.

Nice that it already has an awning, windows and decals if you want to please the DVSA and get it registered as a motorcaravan when your done converting it.

What is it like inside?

Gutted but, unfortunately, this van didn't come to fruition... :( Looked great on the surface but was a real mess underneath and had a few other problems i wasn't particularly happy with, in the end i had to walk away.

Sorry if i was a bit premature posting on here haha, thought 'she was the one' and that it was a done deal, definitely got myself carried away and learned a pretty good lesson about van-buying.

The search continues; my next post will be when it's on my drive at home haha!

Hardest decision ever to walk away from a vehicle once you've fallen for it. Especially you lol uploaded pics and everything. Nonetheless good decision if it wasn't the right vehicle for you.

... Got myself a van and this time she's a keeper!

She's a MK6 lwb high-top, former council van - only done 24k miles! MOT history shows it doing approx 1200 miles a year, all it's life! Engine is like brand new, runs sweet as a nut and body work is gorgeous - must have been dry stored. All the underside is rust-proofed and in perfect condition. I'm over the moon with it.

The previous owner had owned it a couple of months and started converting to a camper but had to bail out and get rid, so bought it as an unfinished project. Comes with lots of quality equipment but the fit-out work done is not for me, so first job is ripping it straight out, back to empty shell and blank canvas.

Can't wait to get started. FIrst job is to replace the sliding door with a windowless one to install matching sliding windows on the near-side.

Will put up more pics once i've cleared it out and tidied it up, look forward to posting updates as i go!

Hurrah! Shame about the other van, but at least you took the time to look at it properly.

It would be nice to see pics of inside before you rip it out, always interested to see what people have done in selfbuilds.

Here are some photo's of the inside... Previous owner had a large static double bed at the back, with garage/storage beneath, an unused shower area and sink unit on the opposite side to the sliding door access, and a cooker and fridge immediately to the right as you walk in.

Made a start over the weekend stripping all the existing conversion out. I'm no professional but it was actually some of the worst bodgery I've seen; both wordwork and electrical. Plan to go back to bare shell and start again, salvaging as much of the insulation and t&g cladding as possible to put back in.

Also managed to find a replacement sliding door, sans-window, for £50 off ebay.

Thinking about moving the front right camper window to the left back panel, filling the existing hole with the exact same shape cut out from the new position. Anyone have any experience moving windows and 'filling' panels? So you know if the piece cut out of the back left panel would weld into the front right panel nice enough to rub down, fill and leave a decent enough finish? Not sure if there's any slight curvature in the window panels which be a problem, if it differs between the panels...

You've got a lot of good stuff that will help you on your way there. Looks like you've got a solar panel with it too. Is the Fridge just 240v or will it run on 12v and/or gas?

I've never liked the idea of a static bed over a garage. It means you have to make other arrangement for seating if you don't have swivel front seats, plus the missus has scoliosis so couldn't get in and out of one anyway. It also means you have to roll around in the garage to get to anything in the back of it.

Yea, to be fair, as bad as the workmanship is, the equipment is all really good stuff. There is indeed a 250w solar panel feeding 2 x leisure batteries, and the fridge runs only on 12v... would have liked the 3-way system but this apparently gets 3/4 days off 2 x batteries, so should be ok.

I think you're right about the static bed; would be great if you had enough room to have it AND have a proper seating area, but that's just not the case, so currently pondering a new layout with daytime seating area, evening bed.
