What would YOU do with ‘96 banana smiley Camper

Postby npjrogers » Sun Jan 03, 2021 11:52 am

We have a ‘96 banana smiley swb Camero Campervan. She is in mint condition for her age.. we have decided to keep her but would like to spend a bit to upgrade her.. not necessarily to a turbo as we dont worry about going quickly around Ireland.. She has 86k miles and needs some bodywork tlc but no major cut and weld, thank goodness. We are looking for Transit related things that improve her.
We will also be fitting some goodies to the internal fitout.

I take it that you already have swivel seats and a suitably good sound system?

Oversized door seals has reduced noise in the cab on the HiCube.

As-and-when money allows I'm putting European all season tyres on (I'm slowly converting to mk6 wheel rims)

I should put a new right-hand headlight in as the lens in getting very dull.

Not sure how else to 'upgrade' a mk5 diesel, I think it's more about spending money on higher quality tyres and spares.

Have you any pics so we know what you are starting with?

If the engine is running ok ld just give it a full service timing belt adjust the tappets block off the egr and clean out the inlet manifold as you say it’s a camper van even though you can’t beat having loads of power it’s not like you are always in a hurry in a camper.

That's really nice. I have a mk4 SWB Leisure Drive converted one, it is not as tidy as yours and I had a nightmare with rust but it's on road now and have just started (well last summer) to get some good use out of it. Looking to get an awning soon.

I've done the whole EGR clean and blank etc. Noticed an improvment.

Do you have any inside pics?

That's lovely, I would consider trust prevention underneath and wax oil into all the box sections and cavities.

Looks nice. I would consider a plug in point for a smart battery charger. A cold morning can often catch us out. Especially in winter when a campervan isn’t used so much.

What are these oversized door seals.

I agree I'd consider apoly waxoyl to the underside asst is the transits weakness.

My Numax battery charger came with a Torberry connection in the lead so I fitted a Torberry point on both starter battery and the leisure battery for easy charging. No more struggling for access or waggling of croc clips to get a good connections. Torberry connectors are also good for connecting higher current items like tyre pumps and powered cool boxes.

The front doors and sliding door on the mk5 use a generic rubber seal, and there is a bigger size available, for examplehttps://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/324151515674
