Seat belt side for MOT

Postby FCMUK » Sun Mar 28, 2021 8:37 pm

I’ve searched and there’s lots of posts on seats. Apologies if there are threads already about this.

I’m taking the front passenger double out and moving it back to a forward facing position in line with where it came out. I want to then fit a single in the front on a swivel mount.

The single seat available is from the driver’s side of a minibus with integral seat belt. So my question is whether it is legal and will pass an MOT with a passenger seat belt coming from the right shoulder to left waist? I can’t see it contravening anything, after all the belt side is traditionally dictated by having a B pillar for mounting to.

Also, I have seen another thread where it is claimed that any seat modifications need to be signed off by a motor engineer. What are people’s thoughts/ experience of this? My insurer is well aware of the impending seat modification and gave no indication of that being a requirement. More than happy (apart from additional cost) to get that done, as the guy I use for welding and lends a hand on types of jobs tends to over engineer everything.

Some insurers require an engineers report - but its not a legal requirement.

From an MOT perspective it makes no difference on which side of the seat the belt comes from - but if you get a drivers seat have a good look, you may be able to swap the latch to the other side?
