Breakdown cover for 16+ vehicles (and Europe)

Postby DG-Unit » Fri Sep 03, 2021 10:25 am

As my van turned 16 this summer, Dynamo won't cover it anymore. I can get reasonable UK quotes from Green Flag etc. However, I really want to be able to make a trip to France/Spain and another to Ireland. I did a one-off trip quote and it's coming back around £230 for a few weeks which is madness and nobody will give me European or personal cover for a 16+ van.

For those with older vans and campers that take them abroad - are there are tricks or places to go for reasonable cover or am I better off spending £200 on a tow rope and French lessons? If I can't find something closer to £100-150 I'll go without cover. By next summer a load more preventative maintenance will have been done (and the van will be much more reliable than when it was 15 years old) and I'll take a tool kit. But if the fuel pump electrics go or more than one tyre gets shredded I might be stuffed.

Does it make any difference getting it registered as a motor caravan with the DVLA? I know this is going to be tricky with a low-top with how they are right now but I won't be far off the requirements by next summer.

I just renewed mine. Best price with the options I wanted and no excess was to stick with with "Cover My Breakdown".

They did have a europe option but I didn't tick it so can't say what the price would have been if I did.

I rang them to check wording and did have an interesting conversation with them about two points though:

Camper - they repeatedly asked me if it had been converted into a camper. I said no as mine hasn't but I wonder if that would have made the price worse or better? It sounded like it would be worse - I wonder if they get a lot of calls for flat batteries or vans that don't move very often?

Recovery - they seemed to be very vague around whether recovery would be guaranteed - i.e. I wouldn't have the choice at the roadside. I would have to be towed to a local garage first and only if they couldn't fix it there and then would they consider recovery home. That may be standard "cover your a**e" wording for all recovery companies now, but it didn't seem totally clear. I decided to say yes, so we'll see how we get on if we do break down....

*EDIT - I did van only cover, not personal.

With my camper been on a460 I’ve had to join the camping club to get RAC European and uk cover that been £45 + RAC fee I think you can get older campers on this maybe worth having a look .Another idea the European cover from Ford if it’s had a service maybe a go if the van is not to old.

I did a quote for a 30-day Europe trip on money supermarket. As a van the quote was £180 but when I changed to motor caravan it went down to £100.

I dont own anything under 22 years old and LV Rescue (Brittania Rescue) cover mine no problem.
You'll need to get a quote for foreign use as I don't have it.

A lot of places are limiting personal cover to vehicles under 16 years old - in the small print

I have a account with nationwide, £13/m phone, travel, breakdown, might be worth giving them a bell.

I went with LV in the end. One of only a few places I could find European cover for a 16+ vehicle. £142 for the year. One place was £110 but the reviews were shocking and seemed like a lot of hidden extras. There was a few other big name providers but quote came in at £250-350 :o
