Renogy feed

Postby ste550 » Sun Nov 14, 2021 8:20 pm

Hiya, I've been looking for a switched terminal to feed the Renogy in the fuse box under the drivers seat, I'm keeping the leisure batteries separate from the two cab batteries and adding switched solar supply, there's also a red capped terminal behind the drivers seat but they're all live, am I looking in the wrong place ? Cheers.

If you have a mk8 in the front left corner of the seat box is a six or 4 pin plug that has a switched ignition feed in it I think the mk7 is different.

What do you mean by a switched Renogy supply?

There's a wire goes from ignition to the Renogy, comes with it and plugs in, for a smart alternator but needs connecting to make it charge is what I understand.

Ah right. You've got a Renogy DC/DC charger, probably with solar controller, like mine (mine's a DCC50S) Just let me know what model.
But the whole idea is that the van's battery(s) are connected to your leisure batteries.
You're asking about a D+ signal wire. Dumper has indicated where it is in the Mk8.
However, I used a switched live from the fuse box in mine. Strictly speaking it's not correct, but mine works fine.
Here is my setup. The wire you're referring to is the thin red one coming out to the left.

Just realised. I don't think the Mk7 has a smart alternator. So you don't need to connect that signal wire. But you DO have to connect to the van battery. It's where you get your alternator charge from!

Some do some don't, TBH either way the DC50s works better with the ign feed connected, on mine i got 8A max without it (non smart alt) 25A with it connected and if i turn the solar off i get the ni on the full 50A from it (actually i get 48.7A for some reason) it's a biy picky is the DC50s IME :?

That's interesting. Of course we know that when solar is switched on the alternator charge is automatically reduced by 50% on this model.
But the other current levels are interesting. I haven't actually measured them. All I know is that my batteries are maintaining a health voltage!
My main quandary is whether I need a "proper" D+ signal, or just a switched 12v feed.

Firstly, what model (or type) of device from Renogy do you have?
Have you exactly followed the installation instructions?
If you have a B2B (DC/DC) charger, and the wire you're referring to is the D+ signal lead, then if your cigarette socket is a switched live you'll have effectively done what I did with my Mk8, which works for me. But if you do not have a smart alternator, then you don't need to worry about that lead.
