camper insurance renewal time woes.

Just received my renewal quote from Adrian Flux.

It's jumped from £297 last year to £508! After stripping back EU breakdown and other extras, the quote for the insurance has doubled!

So, went online to MangeySuperMarket for some online quotes, and only got 5, and not all of those offered breakdown cover, let alone the EU cover which we need. Had a look at Comfort, Direct Line and Saga, who hadn't quoted online in the past, still no joy. Then I followed up Grove and Dean, who did give a price on MSM, but they wouldn't give a quote either. Don't go there on buying seperate EU breakdown cover, the cheapest (and only) quote I could get for that was from the AA, £300 for an annual policy!

One company did come through, that being Comfort. They wouldn't quote online, but did at least say at the end that it was due to the base vehicle. On top of that they actually rang back to go through the quote to get a price, a more reasonable £407.50, but for that I'd also need to provide a gas safety check certificate, something I've never had as I check it myself. Not only that, because we're self-employed market traders they needed reassuring that it wasn't going to get used for business purposes, which it isn't. We have a cheap tax tramp mk7 for that.

It seems that Transit-based motorhomes are taking quite a knock on the insurance market, thanks to poor security, and many insurance companies want a subscription tracker fitted, at great expense, before they will entertain you. Fine if you a ridiculously expensive 'moho' and pots of money to support it, but I can see many budget self-built Transit campers being priced off the road thanks to extortionate insurance quotes. What makes it all the annoying is that our recent renewal on the work van went DOWN by a quarter!

Still have Grove and Dean to talk to, before getting back to Adrian Flux. AF do have a 'we'll beat that quote' thing going on, so maybe they will.

Haven't tried A Plan, I'll take a look.

Forgot to mention, at least one of the insurers asked, in the first set of questions, "is your vehicle a Ford?" Says it all really.

Adrian Flux increased the cover for my Mk8 conversion from £327 to £407 this year.
But I went to Peter Best and got it for £321 (I have UK and Ireland breakdown under a separate policy).

Got a quote for insurance back from A Plan - £354, lower than Comfort, but only 30 days EU cover (I'd need at least 60) and that didn't include breakdown.

Still Grove and Dean to get in touch with.

insurance sorted! it's still gone up, but only by £24, not 200+ :D

Looking through various other quotes, it was clear some of the info on the Adrian Flux policy was out of date, including immobiliser type and occupation.

Still with Adrian Flux, still got EU breakdown, and the policy now covers us for 10,000 miles instead of 8,000.

Moral of the story is, check your summary and other documents, and keep your info up to date.
