Transit for camper?

Postby Blackadder » Sun Jun 22, 2008 11:08 pm

Hi

What Transit do you thinks is most suitable for conversion to a camper van? it's a bit like how long is a piece of string, but my requirements are diesel engine, must be economical, must have headroom. An ex-ambulance could be a good choice(?) but I'm concerned about some of the exceptionally high miles I have seen and the possibility that they will not return good MPG as they are twin rear axles, at least the ones I've seen.

ex ambilances make excellent camper conversions - very efficient with the space inside - you can stand up in them and they are very light inside as they are allready fitted with skylights :D

the MPG is always a compromise :) bigger van with more space = less MPG

the worst thing i think with ambilance campers is they still look like ambilances when there done  tho i have seen a few that were very well done and looked like pukka campers :D

Yes that is my concern, it would look like an ambulance and seen as my DIY skills are basic, at best, are there an suggestions on model of transit that would be suitable for conversion. other than "any" (as you would expect on this forum).

this depends on your budget and your budget for conversion.

most ambys are diesel so it depends on whether you need a turbo or not ?

try looking on ebay or autotrader for either a donor or a partial camper

there is this on ebay currently viewtopic.php?f=11&t=29988

hope this helps a bit

i know it sounds common sence but you need to look at how many of you their is dogs etc.?? and how long you'll be away in it!
bluevanman made an exellent camper from a mk5 swb low roof but for long weeks away i would have been cramped but for the odd weekend it would be perfect if you wanted to use it as a daily driver too :D

depends how tall you are ?

I am 6'2" and i can safely say i cannot stand in the back of my semi high.

infact you would have to be about 5 foot to do so !!!

dunno if this may be of some use but,
i recently spent a weekend away in my mk3,
onto the site rolls an ex ambulance,

ok, this dont sound to good so far....
i should of said
onto the site rolled a friggin smart looking transit with some kinda body conversion on it,

reason is,
this guy had sprayed the thing in what looked like cobolt blue metallic
and he'd sprayed the sign space for the word ambulance above on the roof,
along with the blue light lenses which are inset into the front corners of the roof,

in all honesty,
it took me a good while to suss what had been done,
and it looked absolutley spot on
